2025: A Fantastic Pink Year?

Me n' a few of the fellas *almost* had the marketing folks at Jim's Rubber Pants Co. convinced enough to run this picture in the 2015 catalog...shot down by brass.

Which is only fitting, as I *am* a member of clan Humpy. My alma mater, class of 2001...

Your semi-annual reminder that #humpiespaythebills for some of us!

Now back to your regularly scheduled humpy-bashing πŸ’©

I was out fishing slack on a reef for ling cod this weekend. The kind of place you can only fish at slack in the big water. I noticed porpoise spread out feeding. Not in a pod moving, they were working the little bit of flow. Then I heard the sound of an Orca taking a breath and looked over and saw the biggest Orca I have ever seen. The dorsal on the thing looked 10’ high. Scared the shit out of me. There were some smaller orcas with the big one I’d guess would be a bull and his ladies? The smaller ones were nothing compared to the behemoth. Anyway, I wonder if they were feeding on humpers? Seemed like there was a serious feeding frenzie happening and I can’t think of what other fish that many porpoises and orcas would be after? That dorsal though, holy fuck, I’ve seen like a dozen orca pods around here and never saw anything like that. It was a classic, β€œwe are going to need a bigger boat” type of moment.

Get any photos? There haven’t been any fish eaters in the Salish Sea in over a month so highly likely that the orcas were mammal eaters. Also, it’d likely be that the big male was an adult son of one of the females present.

I agree those orcas likely Biggs aka transient orcas. A mature Biggs will typically be about 3 feet longer than a resident with a larger dorsal fin (can be greater than 5 feet tall).

Curt
The dorsal was easily longer than 5’. I have zero doubts it was well beyond 5’ long. I don’t know much about orcas but that whale was absolutely massive and terrifying. I have been around pods of orca in a 17’ Lund numerous times and never felt the feelings that beast gave me. I was in an 22’ C Dory (my newer boat) and the whale was way bigger. Also, the other orca with it were very much smaller than the beast and their dorsal did not have such a up and tall dorsal. I looked up pics of a Biggs dorsal and it looked like that.

It was quite a sight. It’s been a while since I was so awestruck and overwhelmed by a magnificent creature like that. It gives me goose bumps thinking about if.

I didn’t take the pic I added but it looked like that. Very tall in proportion to the whale and very different than I have seen numerous times.

That’s a photo of T14 aka O4 who was part of the last capture in WA back in 1976. Those notches on the leading edge of his fin are from the bolts for his vhf transmitter that was applied before he was released. His presumed Mom T13 also got a transmitter.

He died in 2010 at approximately 46 years old. I had a lot of cool encounters with him back in the day.

I wish I had more than an iPhone camera with me. There was no way I could get a good picture of the whale from several hundred feet away with my iPhone camera.

THOR (T46E) may be the name of that guy.....That tomcat has been around

Based on the time/date/location, pretty sure the hulking mass of whale in question was T123A. :)
T123A- "Stanley"
those of you who wanted pink shirts: I finally found some. Stand by while they load into the store. if you already ordered one and want to change colors, lemme know. I'll link the new one here shortly.
Also and damn, the shirt selection is fantastic right now, just ordered up a CAPR and ODD YEAR, so thanks guys!

The Capr one just makes me laugh. It kinda looks like a miss-print shirt that gets dumped on a non-English speaking market, only looks higher quality with a really nice woodblock print look to it.

(Yesterday I saw one that had "GRID IRON" in really exciting lettering but instead of a football theme, it had a basketball net with a basketball heading for it. The dissonance of it was just about perfect, plus really bold colors worn by a guy in his 60's who had a look like "I know... and I don't give a F&%....")

I put CAPR on today and my stylish designer wife, with bleary just opened morning eyes, was immediately attracted to the design…and confused by the messaging.πŸ‘

For some people some things are funny exactly because they don’t make sense. For example, I have long been a fan of Vanilla Ice. I even published a zine called Pump It, Hottie! #learningaboutMattB

LOL, as a long time Monty Python fan, I can appreciate random/absurd humor. Oddly in this case, what throws me with CAPR is the meaning behind the misspelling. I'm assuming it's an intentional word scramble/simile between what is commonly considered a trash fish, and another slang word for poop using the same letters? As for the fish, I totally get the fascination. Sight fishing for a large, smart, and powerful fish in shallow water... what's not to like?
