2023 Garden Thread

I’m a little humored having jumped the gun more than once myself.
Salvageable with some effort
I seeded my tomatoes around 15 March
I will start mine in a few days. I'm not a fan of transplanting and disturbing the roots so as soon as they are 3-4" tall in the cell they go into the ground. That should put me around the beginning of May 🤞 I'm a bit late.

These lights have out performed any expectations I had. But even with that i knew what I was doing starting tomatoes at the beginning of Feb. so 67 days from seed now… huh? And Holy Crap!

Most of my lawn died this past winter. It’s yellow straw and as days go by it is dissolving and it’s more dirt in the yard. Weird. I can easily grab a few blades and a whole chunk of yellow grass comes up. Never experienced this before for a whole yard. Always had spots but this is sad.

It would be a toss up between redo the lawn and battle with it mowing fertilizing wTering all that stuff I used to do for decades… or with lumber prices dropping a lot - raised boxes and big pots and pathways made however you want. Tis a great option

Not bad idea but for this house the front yard is center piece. What I had. Not now.

I only wish my "lawn" would die off - covered the chunk within our semicircle drive with 3-4 inches of pine straw over the winter, didn't work, grass and weeds popping up throughout, everywhere I didn't plant. Our plan is to replace with native grasses, mini-clover, and perennials, mulch/xeriscape the rest - attractive (I think) and low maintenance.

Cheers

Crane fly infestation possibly? My dad had a similar situation with his lawn and that was the cause. His lawn basically became dirt.
