Secondhand Reel Service- A Qualitative Analysis

Update- Hatch responding: “Due to exhaustion of parts, we do not offer upgrades from generation 1 to generation 2” Cost was gonna be $50 for the drag knob alone, not including replacement/repair of clicker spring. More than I want to spend on a secondhand reel.

Secondhand Reel Service- A Qualitative Analysis

Thought it would be interesting to share about my personal perspective on company communication and customer service related to fly reels, after reading threads regarding rod manufacturers and turnaround time for fixing/replacing damaged rods. All of my reel models were purchased secondhand and...

    Mini Bully Report

Agreed. I’ve caught skinnier, but he didn’t have much of a belly

    Mini Bully Report

River was running low and glacial/clear, but overnight rain had me nervous. Combed 2 miles of water to find a few players, this being the best. Another species on the @Evan B airflo special!

    Float trip heat

This is the best new addition for me this year. I wear lightweight pants + sun hoodie + hat + sunglasses, but my cheeks, nose and hands/feet are exposed. Sunscreen stick for the face and hands/feet designed like a deodorant stick so you don’t have to get your hands greasy/oily when applying...

    Micro-fisheries

One thing I miss most about living in the PNW are the many “micro-fisheries” I discovered over the years. Relegated to fishing weekends only, I had nightmares of fighting for elbow room at the popular river runs, boat ramps, and beaches. This, combined with unending curiosity (and boredom of...

Real costs/experiences of an outboard repower?

Following this thread- have a 1999 key west center console with a 70hp Johnson of the same year. I feel that a repower is inevitable, but I’m hoping to put it off as long as possible.

Mini Redfish Report (thanks @Evan B!)

Sweet! I’ve never travelled to fish them, been spoiled here locally in SC. Good luck!

Mini Redfish Report (thanks @Evan B!)

Got a nice package in the mail from a certain @Evan B last week and spooled up my trusty Islander reel with a fresh 9wt Airflo floater. This was tastefully paired with my beater Cabela’s 8wt. Tonight I slipped my paddleboard into the grass flat at the back of the neighborhood and nabbed a couple...

What’s the best landing net deal out there?

Hit a few thrift stores and find an aluminum net- pick one with a hoop size and handle length you like. The net will be knotted, tangled and dry-rotten (not fish friendly at all). Cut it right off. Hop on eBay and buy a “replacement rubber net bag” of the approximate circumference of your hoop...

Post your first fish of 2025 here

Already posted my first elsewhere, but had another great winter session in the Lowcountry this morning.

The "How was your weekend?" thread...

Overnight lows below freezing led to lethargic fish in the marsh, but managed to pick this one out of a school.

    Favorite fish/story/trip of 2024?

Always my favorite thread of the year! My first guided trip ever. I was in West Palm Beach with friends and booked a "night shift expedition" to sight-fish snook under dock lights at midnight. 4 hours of consistent action with some jack crevalle mixed in, and my buddy even got a juvenile...

    Why No Center Consoles?

Totally agree, which could explain the simple aluminum/tiller crowd. However, there are used center consoles at almost every price point out here, and are priced very similarly to the inboard/outboard bayliners and other fish/ski boats.

    Why No Center Consoles?

Saw this on one of the other threads, beautiful. What size yamaha?

    Why No Center Consoles?

Huh, maybe I'm just thinking about it from a fly-fishing perspective and not seeing the bigger picture. I guess if you're never casting and retrieving then you have no need for an open bow/casting deck. However, I'm sure you could find a way to rig downriggers on just about any kind of gunwale...
