@Chris DeLeone, did you fish a Skagit Mist Spey fly in the skagit mist?

    It dies with a wimper..

The skagit was on the rise and coloring up yesterday but I went through the motions. Saw a few others braving the rain...

    Skykomish Post Flood

Oh to have been a fly fisherman back then. I read in one of Enos Bradner's books that the Skykomish River sport catch (sport catch, not the total run) was 7,800 fish in 1968...

    Skykomish Post Flood

Dennis, is Afternoon hole the long left hand bend below IRS which flows along US 2? Today the top of the pool has a nice riffle and break. The middle of the pool is a big wide flat (bull trout water). The tail of the pool is very slow and not particularly fishy.

Agree that a type 3 tip or very short line is what you need to do when fishing the riffle head.

    Skykomish Post Flood

Of course you knew about the back channel Curt. Why am I not surprised. :) I also took quite a few steelhead in the long tailout between the back channel pool and thunderbird. Never saw anyone else fishing there. I think they might have been fish getting ready to spawn because I saw redds...

    Skykomish Post Flood

I wasn't the only person who knew about the backchannel pool. Figures that @doublespey knew about it. It was overlooked by most of the boats and gear guys coming down the main channel. The run across from IRS fishes nicely. Isn't it called Jack Daniels? I think the cones were up at the...

    Skykomish Post Flood

Hadn't been on the Sky in years. Drifted Sultan to Ben Howard yesterday to see what the flood did. Firemans is still the same. Two Bit is gone. The entire river goes right and the old left channel is now almost dry. Anyone else ever catch a steelhead at the pool at Rivers End Cattle...

    Harry Lemire Day

It was Harry Lemire Day today. Took my 12' Sharpes spliced fly rod, a 4" Hardy and and some Harry Lemire Patterns to a big riffle. A fair amount of sediment in the water. The Golden Edge Orange looked nice in the sunshine but no steelhead. Stopped by 5B's for a cinamon roll after...

    Farlows reels

I put my farlows on Sharpes spliced bamboo fly rods. Have 9', 10', 12', 13' and 14' Sharpes spliced bamboo rods. They are switch and spey casting machines and excel at casting longer belly spey lines. I use the Rio Midspey, Barrio switch, Bridge Wintertide and Carron spey lines.

    What fish is this?

Curt, what's the tipoff that it might be a female? Some more food for thought. I seem to remember reading a Pete Soverel article in The Osprey or somewhere years ago where he talked about catching small steelhead in the fall on a dry line below the snoqualmie/sky confluence.

    What fish is this?

I think you're right Salmo_G Jack is what I'm thinking. Here's a resident trout which came from the same river on the same day and was colored up...

    Hook Design = Effect

No idea why most streamer flies have turned down eyes. A 5x long straight eye hook is recommended for thunder Creek minnows because it makes it easier to manipulate the materials at the head when tying. Surprised noone wants to tie muddlers with straight eye hooks for the same reason.

I have some 5/0 mustad m’s. I trot them out every now and then for dry line steelhead

Stone River Outfitters also has some great long shank streamer hooks like the Partridge CS5 9x long hook. https://www.stoneriveroutfitters.com/fly-tying/fly-tying-hooks/partridge-cs5-9x-heritage-streamer-hooks.html

    Hook Design = Effect

I too have a hard time finding the long shank hooks in local stores. Maybe someone else can weigh in on a good local source. Dette flies has a great selection of streamer hooks. I like their Mustad 5X long and 7X long hooks. https://detteflies.com/collections/streamer-hooks
