    Bamboo on a creek

Took my 6'9" 4 weight Constable Wallop Brook rod and JW Young 1A reel to a couple of North Cascade creeks this weekend. Here's to you Tim Cottage. This creek is bigger than many and has delightfully open banks... Not sure why I bring a bunch of flies because I almost always end up with a...

    Overnight Trip to Hi-Lakes

Not surprised you blanked from 6-9 in the morning and again at evening. I've always done best on high lakes fishing gentleman's hours 9-3, but then most of the lake I fish are pretty high so it's good when they warm up middle of the day. Sometimes at evening there can be a rise but I've been...

    Stocker Trip

Our resident alpine expert @Phil K has taken lunkers out of this lake and written it up before. Pretty sure the stream is full of brookies because the lake which it flows from has brookies - and some surprisingly big brookies.

    Clouds and Rainbows

Great fly for high lakes. Looks like a terrestrial. I always try to have some Black Pennels in my alpine lakes box. A greenwells glory imitates callibaetis nymphs. A butcher is a bright attractor pattern. And the Black Pennel looks like a beetle or ant. The more fish you catch the buggier...

    Favorite hopper pattern?

I'm old school. Give me a letort hopper. Really small sizes (12-14) seem to work just as well as large sizes.

Bamboo 6 weights at Meadow Lakes Fishing Camp

Haven't had a mishap in a boat so far. Fingers crossed. The risk to a rod (stepping on it, falling on it, having something fall on it) is the same in a boat whether the rod is cane or graphite. My cane rods are mostly medium priced used production rods (e.g. granger, phillipson, sharpes)...

Bamboo 6 weights at Meadow Lakes Fishing Camp

Took three bamboo 6 weights up to Meadow Lakes fishing camp in BC: a 9' Winston 4 and 7/8's oz hollow-build, a 9' Wright and Mcgill Waterseal and an 8'8" Sharpes. Snug recently built cabins which are a step above what you see at the rustic camps. Some chironomids but no sedge hatch. We spent...

    High Lakes Searching

Great report. Wonder if the grouse was protecting a nest? Love prospecting new waters but every now and then you can run into a winterkilled lake, esp with smaller waters.

    Bamboo and difficult brookies

You are right. My Granger 8642 actually weighs 4.8 ounces. I figure the blank is 4.25 ounces and the reel seat and guides add an additional 0.6 ounce.

    Bamboo and difficult brookies

Wish it was that simple @Roper . Granger used the first two numbers in the model number to refer to the length of the rod and the second two numbers to refer to the approximate weight of the rod in ounces. So a Granger 7630 is a 7'6" rod which weighs 3 ounces, a Granger 8040 is an 8' rod...

    Bamboo and difficult brookies

Usually the pilot flies up and over the ridge at the inlet head of the lake and then flies down the lake into the wind to land. That approach wasn't possible for us due to the low cloud cover. The pilot had to fly in through the V-notch at the lake's outlet and land with the wind at his back...

    Adventure in Iceland

Great report. Agree about there being no biting flies. I often wore a headnet during calm periods because the non-biting flies wanted to fly into my eyes and nose. The river fishing is very expensive. The lake fishing is spectacular and the lakes are much cheaper and in some cases free.

    Bamboo and difficult brookies

Took a float plane trip to a Washington alpine lake last weekend. Some not so happy anglers waiting all day at the seaplane base for the clouds to clear in the mountains so we could fly in... A nice camp on the lake's sandy shore... No propane or fuel allowed on the floatplane so we had...
