    2025 Tuna and Exotics

Question for the seasoned tuna guys. I’m looking at getting a second 12wt to add to the quiver in case I break one. Would an extra long, extended fighting butt be advantageous to have for leverage and to distance the reel from you a bit? I don’t know how far the blank goes into the butt section...

    Puget Sound

Pretty slow day overall until @KFCDAVE showed up and proceeded to land a beauty within the first 30 minutes while I was lining up a new rod. Went 1/2 and put some hours in. Better than yesterday at least which was DEAD slow. Like zero fish landed by anyone slow. Today there were a few coho...

    Puget Sound

I spent quite a few years catching pinks and coho with buzz bombs/rotators before I started fly fishing. I then committed fully to fly fishing for them. The key to having any success was leaving the gear rod at home and fully committing. Was it easy at first? No, but I learned a lot in that...

    Puget Sound

I can relate. In perhaps a sadistic way, I like to fish our beaches for peace of mind and a form of meditation. I generally enjoy the local crowd on the beaches I fish, even if I’m the oddball in the bunch and have little to say to most of them. It’s a different social interaction than I get on...

Pinks were showing pretty good the last few days. Not lights out yet but better than last week. Better than the coho fishing…

    Backyard Wildlife

We’ve had a nesting pair of Coopers Hawks in my neighbors tree, two years in a row now. They (and presumably a few offspring) are super chatty and active right now. So much so that they dominate the soundscape. Listening to them is a nice break from the usual urban soundtrack.

Mushroom and other wild edible foraging

Coastal strawberry from a few days ago. About a week too early as most of the fruits were not ripe yet. It’s not a numbers game but they sure are fun to find. They make up for their tiny size with amazing flavor and fragrance.

NFR Cool finds in your backyard...

Reviving this old thread. Just had my backyard graded which is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I’ve found a few old artifacts while digging raised beds back there and I’m certain there used to be an outhouse at one point in time (house is circa 1905). Outhouses were commonly used as...

    SFR Reapplication of Sunscreen?

Well I got some good news from the doc yesterday. Biopsy results came back negative for basal cell carcinoma. Turns out it was sebaceous hyperplasia which can mimic basal cell. Now I’ll have this cool looking scar on my nose as a reminder to always lather up.

    SFR Reapplication of Sunscreen?

Well shit, I just got a biopsy done yesterday for a spot on my nose. I should get the results by late next week. Crossing my fingers for some good news but no matter what happens, I’ll be covering up when on the water from here on out. I’ve been pretty good about making sure to apply sunscreen...

Mushroom and other wild edible foraging

Haven’t been out much this spring but managed to get out for a few days after Memorial Day weekend. A little early for spring kings but found a few buttons. Looked at a burn that put out some here and there but nothing too exciting. Still great to get some hiking in and have an excuse to get dirty.

    Puget Sound

Found at LP this evening. Someone else put the stick through the mouth and perched it on the log for us to enjoy. Pretty good sized head on that thing.

    Primitive Saltwater Fishing

For a while now I’ve been fascinated with primitive fishing methods, especially those from NW coast tribes. Ive been dreaming of catching a pink with hand made line, hook and fly. Maybe using a bull kelp whip shooting head/hand line of sorts? It’s fun to imagine at least🤣 This video focuses on...
