Any suggestions around Portland? Would love to finally see this

I'm surprised that NASA is talking this up this so early as northern light displays can be difficult to forecast days ahead of time. Check out this website and try to get as far away from the dome of light around a big city as possible: https://www.cleardarksky.com/maps/lp/large_light_pollution_map.html

I enjoy trying to photograph the aurora as typically the big solar storms are hard to see with the unaided eye in the lower latitudes but easily captured with modern camera sensors. Here are a couple of images from the last solar storm that I took in a dark place along the California/Oregon border on April 24th. The top pic is how the solar storm appeared to my eye at its peak and the bottom image is what my camera sensor captured. The only difference in the two images is the amount of time I allowed the camera to collect light (no editing).

I'm not seeing anything that makes me think we are going to get a shot at seeing the aurora this week. That could change but it sounds like the coronal mass ejection heading our way will only hit at a glancing blow at best. Okay for AK and Canada but not so good for the northern tier states in the lower 48. If anything changes - I'll post here. Here are the websites I use: https://spaceweather.com/ https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/https://www.spaceweatherlive.com/en/auroral-activity/aurora-forecast.html

There’s a G1 geomagnetic storm underway this evening with the chance for it to get stronger. Any of you folks in Washington, Idaho and Montana may want to peek outside to look for the Aurora before going to bed. The further north you are, the better chance you might have to view it.

It’s now a G2 storm - the Aurora may become visible in NE Oregon where skies are dark. If it goes to a G3 storm - it should be visible throughout much of the PNW.

It did end up becoming a G3 storm (kp 7) and was apparently visible to the unaided eye in parts of Washington. Not my photo but here's an image from last night taken near Anacortes.
