I fish with @Kfish a decent amount. If he’s going to start adding seatrouty type patterns to his box, I have to as well. God forbid they start crushing and I’m empty handed. I can’t match his skill at the vise but this should do for our local SRC friends.

abdomen: Scintilla #63
hackle 3 turns of medium orange Palmer chenille
hackle: dark brown hen
thorax: dark brown Wapsi squirrel
(I was looking for a pattern that could use Palmer chenille)

Body - Peacock herl, with an underbody of dark olive yarn
Hackle - Brown tied on as a collar and tied back and down.
Wing - White calf tail tied over the body

And I'm likin' that one a lot. I had luck with similar flies last fall, but that one strikes me a really nice.
I’ve been using that pattern for cutthroat and summer steelhead from the time the pupae emerge in September or October until late in the fall. Most of the time it’s a dense hatch. The Steelhead remember those bugs for a long time. Mike Sturza came up with that one. The Palmer chenille is a new addition.

You’re definitely fishing a different part of the water column than I am. I’m near the top with an intermediate leader. It’s an opportunity for me to get a steelhead with a single hand 6 wt. and a floating line. I’m never quite happy with the shade of orange dubbing but the fish keep eating it.
