Black Paradise

Tail - Scarlet red hackle barbs
Ribbing - Oval gold tinsel wrapped over both butt and body

Charles DeFeo of New York City originated this pattern. DeFeo created literally hundreds of Atlantic salmon fly patterns, and some believe that he laid the foundation for our contemporary hair-wing patterns.

A very cool fly from Andrew Grillos; good floatation and visibility. Found a nice video from Charlie Craven; a few minor changes - swapped out the hackle tail for elk hair and used a single post wing instead of divided; change color and size to suit your needs.

hook - Dai Riki 300 #10
thread - UTC 140 dark brown
tail - elk hair
rib - tying thread
abdomen - dubbing rusty orange
back/head - 1mm foam rust
wing - Congo Hair white
legs - medium rubber brown
hackle - grizzly/brown

Scott

hackle - grizzly

Scott - I remember seeing countless midges in some of the Mo's big eddies, thanks for sharing this pattern. Question - is the "tail" just a couple of the body hackles left in place? //Patrick

Patrick,

Yeah. If you watch this video you can see the object is to leave a few body hackle fibers poking out here and there; I probably trimmed mine a bit too neatly.

Scott
