Unicorns

Ya never know. I was swinging a run earlier this week and a raft went through and they got a smallish super bright hen right off the bank at the very tip top of the run on a pink worm under a float. I was happy for them--told myself the only way to get a fly presentation to that fish would've also been from the boat and that wasn't what I was doing. So there's a couple around, at least. Here's your second-hand verification.

Well, it was around 2:30 on a very easy to access run so I imagine I wasn't the first guy through. Keep at it, a guy just never knows.
Ha! No kidding...good for you...you must have done something good in a previous life;)

The last one I got, which was a lifetime ago, was about that same time of day....so much for my OCD compelling me to get up early and be the first one through a run:rolleyes:

Same thing happened to me on the N.F. Wednesday.

While I didn't see any caught this past week, I did talk with some nice guys in a drift boat....said they went 1 for 4 the day before. Gets one all giddy knowing they're out there

Can even motivate one to get up early to get first water.

Guess I'll be hitting some lakes or hiking or whatever for a few months. 😭😱🤤

I remember 6 or 7 years ago I was walking down to the most fished fly water on the river and ran into two buddies on the way out. They said they fished the run and it was good but no fish. I walked down and hooked a fish right at the top of the run. You never know how a person covered the water and fish have tails.

Always a good reminder....and I had a guide tell me once of a study she read that indicated steelhead tended to move every 7 minutes.

That said, when I'm consistently striking out...I tend to rely on
- They are just late
- We need another big push of rain/water
- As soon as the nets are out, they will come
- We are coming off of full moon
- Tides have been shitty lately
- They are holding up down low

;)

I’ve heard some positive reports from the river this week. More than I would have thought.

Didn’t help my fishing. The skunk remains for me.

It is wild how many people still just immediately wade out to their waist, strip off 80 feet and huck it out there. I dunno, I guess you paid for those G4Z's, gotta get your money's worth!

I will admit when I am working my distance out to the max cast before I start stepping down, I do those first few increasing distance casts with the head or tip in the rod pretty impatiently and half-assed, but I do usually have the discipline to take a look around before I get in the water. I have caught hundreds of trout and more than a few steelhead with dry boots.
