Glad I showed up with the kids after that happened. That is one way to get some new piercings with all the hooks flying around though. I caught a hook in the chest that day and they guy next to me caught one with his shorts.

Did the cops even find the guy?

It could have been a victim of Brigg's killer whale attack, but I would have expected that the animal would have been consumed more completely as this species hunts in family groups (typically 4 individuals). Another alternative is that the seal died somehow (natural causes, boat strike, gunshot....), and its carcass was scavenged by a shark, perhaps broadnose seven-gill shark or a salmon shark that managed a bite or two before carcass washed up on the beach. That is a pretty circular bite, consistent with a shark. Just speculation.

I found one that looked very similar while surfing near the mouth of the Strait once. Unnerving for sure.

Son and I paddled out at a fave 'off the beaten track' summer surf spot south of Half Moon Bay, no one else around, surfed some fun waves for a couple of hours, rode a last wave to the beach together at end of session...to find nudged ashore by the incoming tide something that sure the hell hadn't been there when we paddled out...the back half of a sea lion, still oozing blood from the gaping crescent bite...

I snapped a shot of what I thought was an active herring spawn this morning, confused by it occurring this time of year. Then I realized a family had just dumped Dad's ashes into the Sound. Whoops! 😥
