Glad I showed up with the kids after that happened. That is one way to get some new piercings with all the hooks flying around though. I caught a hook in the chest that day and they guy next to me caught one with his shorts.
I am not sure. They guys on the beach were telling the cops he ran into the bushes when I got there. With all of the poison ivy warning signs I am not sure those are bushes I would want to run into naked.Did the cops even find the guy?

I found one that looked very similar while surfing near the mouth of the Strait once. Unnerving for sure.It could have been a victim of Brigg's killer whale attack, but I would have expected that the animal would have been consumed more completely as this species hunts in family groups (typically 4 individuals). Another alternative is that the seal died somehow (natural causes, boat strike, gunshot....), and its carcass was scavenged by a shark, perhaps broadnose seven-gill shark or a salmon shark that managed a bite or two before carcass washed up on the beach. That is a pretty circular bite, consistent with a shark. Just speculation.

While it could have been killed by a predator, almost all cephalopods (octopi, squids, cuttlefish) are semelparous (spawn once and then die, like salmon). Females will guard /aerate their egg mass until the eggs hatch. Then, she will die.

I snapped a shot of what I thought was an active herring spawn this morning, confused by it occurring this time of year. Then I realized a family had just dumped Dad's ashes into the Sound. Whoops!
