Puget Sound

Pretty slow overall for @Salmo_g and I today. Steve hooked one fairly early that broke him off, but despite finding a ton of bait just didn't see a lot that was very exciting. Current was weak as hell.

Ran up into area 9 and we did have a window of maybe an hour or hour and a half of decent action. I bonked a couple and lost a small handful as well as some missed grabs and follows but then things really died out. Fished till around 2 before calling it a day as Steve had a long drive back home. After the one decent window we had it was just a few random missed grabs, a couple follows, and Steve landed a small chinook but that wrapped up our action.

Can't wait for some better tides. Back out Saturday. Was glad to hear they'll keep 9 open those last few days.

Inquiring minds want to know…when are you hitting the beach. Be cool to see you out there.

That said, I understand the appeal of the boat. I’m constantly weighing the benefits of the boat versus beach. Seems like with the work needed to properly clean the boat post trip against the extra fishing time I get fishing the beach, the beach wins out most days. I’ll figure out the appropriate mix someday.

BTW if you were in 9 somewhere around 7:30-8:00 am I may have seen you. I saw a boat that seemed similar to yours around that time. It appeared to have a front mounted trolling motor and power poles but it was a bit far to verify for sure.

I'm sure that was us. I think I landed my first fish just before 8 this morning, not too long after we started fishing in 9.

We did see one fly guy on a ma9 beach right when we got up there. Watched him land a fish and then kinda lost track of him. Couldn't tell who it was but didn't think it was you. Didn't appear like he had a stripping basket. But my boat kinda stands out like a sore thumb in the north sound so I'm sure you saw me lol.

I definitely plan to get in some beach outings at some point, likely when the ocean fish start rolling in in larger numbers. Looking forward to seeing the regular cast of beach folks!
That said, I just love fishing from the boat and the freedom is provides. It's definitely more work but I don't mind, especially since I am just hanging out being a bum right now anyway. But for those quick morning outings nothing beats the ease of a beach trip.

I noticed a boat that looked like yours as I was cleaning my second fish. A fly guy walked up and we chatted for a few right before I left. New guy to the area and new to coho fishing. I pointed him in a direction that was fishing before heading back to the truck. Maybe you saw him catching his first coho. Would make sense he did not have a basket yet. Seemed like a decent dude. Hopefully that’s the case.

Yeah that sounds about right. Did you notice a small HI Laker or similar boat with a single fly guy as well? He was fishing around that area for a bit when we first got up there

Sounds like we may have just caught the tail end of the best of the action there.

As I’m sure everyone has seen MA 9 now closed for Chinook but stays open for hatchery coho & pinks. Now if some of those would swim close to the beaches near me.
I spent from dawn tell about 8 am on a MA 9:with only one hit. Only saw 2 coho landed, but the flat fish were being, slaughtered between 4 and 6 inched. I did see one of the flat fish guys landed one of the two salmon I saw landed

It never hurts to be nice

Yep, he showed up right before I left as well. Makes sense timing wise. Water was going slack around that time I believe with little movement. Not surprised it slowed some.

Ya not much current to speak of when we first got up there but it still fished decent for at least an hour or so before petering out.

Funny thing about longer excursions in the boat vs the shorter beach outings I often used to cram in.....if I hit a beach for a couple few hours and have the kind of action I did up there during that window this morning I consider it a pretty successful outing. However in the boat I'm typically out there for the bulk of the day at least, and when I find a good bit of action for an hour or two in the morning but then not a whole lot for the rest of the day it sure makes me come away thinking it was a pretty slow day lol.

If you don't dig boat fishing I'll give you $5,000 and you can get that thing out of your driveway.

Got out again before work today. Similar pattern to yesterday and a very similar result. 5-6 with 3 finned fish and two to take home. Again, fish had perch in their stomachs. One also had a sandlace???goby???…calling @Smalma…

I bet 5 sand dollars on the top fish being a bay goby :)

Talk about FOMO on coho, Jason is the biggest contributor to the problem here.
I fished for about an hour and a half this morning, all was quiet on the Seattle western front. Nice to have met @Wiznet out there.

Fun morning session with @DimeBrite
My landing ratio sucked, going 4 for 11. 😂
That is how it goes sometimes with coho.
No humpies were harmed in the making of this coho report. 😉

Hoping to get out (prob just a few of the popular MA9 west side beaches) either Saturday or Sunday. Maybe I'll see a few friendly faces from here.

Don’t go Sunday. 😉
