Those shrimp-like creatures are mysids (aka opossum shrimp). There are at least 28 marine species in the PNW (and freshwater species too such as Neomysis mercedes). They are actually more closely to related to amphipods and isopods (Peracarida) than they are to shrimp and crabs (Decapoda). Peracaridian crustaceans lack a larval stage. The females retain fertilized eggs in a brood punch under their thorax, a marsupium. The fertilized young complete their development within the marsupium and emerge as juveniles = miniature adults. While at least one local mysid species, Archeomysis grebnitkii, burrows right in the surf zone along sandy beaches, other species form schools that swim using their thoracic appendages in the nearshore environment. While diving off the west side of San Juan Island, I have encountered schools so thick that you could not see the rock walls behind them. Most species are opportunistic omnivores and are capable of filter feeding on fine particles, such as diatoms.

Thank you Steve, I love the info gained. I was surprised to not see trout cruising with their mouths open due to the quantity.

Nice day out on the water.
Found a bunch of sticklebacks that ended up meeting their maker…. low tide.

The usual amount of trash unfortunately.

One unfortunate incident.
Lesson learned. Don’t leave your backup rod on the garage floor and forget to put it in your rig.
I ended up clipping off the small bit of blank that extended out past the last guide.
The new stubby Sage X 692.5-4 preformed well in its modified state. 😂

A little broody looking out there last evening, but Puget Sound always draws us in doesn’t she?

We used to catch some nice winter Blackmouth right over there. Wish it was still open.
It sounds to me like the logical next step for Blackmouth is for it to be changed into a Spring fishery when the undersized fish should be less prevalent. Which makes me wonder: Could it be a better use of state funds to attempt to reintroduce Spring run Chinook into rivers they historically were present in? I can think of many benefits: Cheaper to raise than the yearling fish used for the Blackmouth program, different spawn timings to native Fall run fish to prevent genetic mixing, the fish will grow larger than Blackmouth and refill the important role they once held as food for the SRKW as well as provide more interesting angling. With the introduction of Spring run fish, I could potentially see anglers more tolerant of Fall/Summer Chinook closures to protect wild origin fish, as the closure later in the summer is offset by new oppurtunities in the Spring.

Of course, when solutions that seem this obvious haven’t been attempted yet, there is usually a reason. Anyone have any ideas why before I suggest it at the next WDFW public comment session?

Nice day with nobody around.
Must have been due to the excellent amount of liquid sunshine.
Nothing to hand fish wise that was picture worthy.

A low tide causality.

A bunch of these on the beach with just their heads missing.

I saw a big wake near my fly and thought it might be a mondo cutt. Turned out to be an otter coming to shore to eat a sculpin it had caught.

Slow morning. Got a limit of trash.
Wonder what got this rabbit? Looked very fresh but no visible wounds I could see.
Maybe a coyote or raptor that I interrupted?

People out kayaking on the sound today in those smaller river kayaks.
The big west wind came up and delivered some ass kicking.
Looked more dangerous than fun. At least the were wearing a PFD, which is a good thing.
