Last night I fished MA10. I was on the hunt for some of those deep swimming kings, so I fished gear. But broke out a fly rod when I saw some action on the surface. Picked up a small silver, and 2 flounders.

There was a lot of bait in the area. Saw some sand lances on the surface. Weird seeing these skinny silver things breaking the surface, never seen them before that thick. Lots of smaller bait to, maybe sickle back or anchovies? Smaller in size. Sammy Seals were out in force too.

All in all a very nice night being on the water despite the fact I broke my outboard.

Thinks for the report, I’m thinking about hitting a MA beach tomorrow morning. sorry about your outboard that a costly fix

Paddled tidal Stilliguamish looking for cutts. About a mile from the Boe st launch the rip rap finally ends and the sorta deep pond becomes a shallow river with a few braids and logjams and so on. The paddle over the pond in itself is interesting in that there are massive, huge old growth submerged deep in that water, but absolutely nothing seemed to be happening there.

When the rip rap ends there's a wildlife preserve. No more live trees and instead stranded drift logs and stumps buried in the sand or floated up onto the grass. A broad and shallow rocky shoal speeds the current way up and cuts some holding water for SRC.

It's a fun paddle but paddler beware, the tide lags the tide charts by a significant margin, it's super exposed though in many placed sandy and rocky enough to wade at dead low. There are a few oyster beds. All the strikes on this trip were within 200 yards of this spot. I brought no fish to hand.

I doubt I will fish this stretch again for SRC. It's cool for photos and birds and novelty but it's a sparse July holding area. I wonder if the water there in some ways is just too warm. Mid May may be a better time...

Maybe closer to the launch the pool fishes better for Salmon, or maybe its better later in the season.

Not a lot of boats at Jeff Head today, especially compared to yesterday.
A view from my walk just now. Damn it’s hot!

Decent coho numbers from Shilshole and one spot in the straights.

Jeff Head produced the first king of the season for me on Saturday. I would guess there were 50 plus boats out there. morning started good in the upper water column catching coho brats to 4 lbs. we went deeper for kings and were rewarded with a 10 lber. lots of action.
Back next week.

From what I have seen the last couple of times I have been out, the people targeting coho really early in the morning have been doing OK. Chinook fishing has been dismal. Lots and lots of bait where the chinook should be, but it is dispersed, happy bait with nothing feeding on it.

I wonder when they’ll update the chinook numbers?
Last update was for MA 9 was 7/16.

Wife and I were just under one of those patches of snow the last couple of days. A bunch of unclipped steelhead smolts kept attacking the dry fly I was using in the river. Got nothing of size but wet wading in some of the coldest water I’ve ever been in …helped immensely with the heat.
Two more hours fishing the fjord yielded one Cutthroat released a little more distantly than I prefer, but it was nice to be out.
