After a recent trip to Fernie, BC (I will try and post a report about that separately), I had put my boots in one recyclable bag and my reels in an identical recyclable bag. I had only about 2 hours to fish, and in a rush, I grabbed the reel bag instead of my boots bag. I had flops on, so why not.
I had seen some smaller (like size 14) Golden colored stones flying around up by the truck, so I tied on my version of that with a sz. 14 brownish jig dropper that I did really well with earlier in the season. First cast, this guy ate the dropper.
Then nothing for a bit. And then a decent sized Ant ran up my leg, so I switched things up.
Dry
Dropper
That was the ticket. First cast after switching to this set up this guy came all the way out of the water and landed on my dry on the way down.
The next cast this guy took the dropper. I was a little undergunned with my 4 wt.
This was all pretty close to the truck, and I was thinking maybe I should pack it up since I was in flops. But man, I knew I had the right fly combo, and I really wanted to get up to the next hole. I had lost an estimated 20" (1 inch bigger than the previous fish) 3 times already earlier in the summer from said hole, and he had stolen 3 of my flies. So, I slowly made my way up there (being careful in the flops).
Unfortunately, I did not catch that fish, but I did catch about 20 others all in the 10 - 15" range on both the dry and the dropper. Some awesome slow rises on the dries. It was a beautiful day on my favorite river. I feel very lucky to be able to drive between 30 - 45 minutes to get to some of my favorite water on the planet. Cracked a Top Cutter on my walk back to the truck!
