Offshore Kona

Went offshore Sunday out of Kona. hit the Tsunami buoy. Got 4 shibi to 30lbs and a nice otaru aku. Got some rats on the fly. Then weather turned nasty. Bummer you have to go 30 miles in Kona to find fish. We were set to go to Christmas Island today but they pulled the plug on us. This was a plan B. I have another friend headed over next week for some bluewater and a trip to Molokai for big bones.

Sweet. Our better grade albies are about that size. Those would be perfect for a YFT/albacore fly rod comparison.

Thirty miles is a short run for us... lucky dog.

We got the ahi on the green stick. One big one missed the squid. There were porpoise just following the squids. We saw a highflyer so there was probably a Marlin there as well. Tried live baiting but had some trouble getting a small aku. So we bridled a rat ahi but then the wind and swell filled in so we got outta dodge. We trolled outside of F buoy but no hits.

Christmas Island is not taking fishermen until maybe July or August. Fiji air canceled our flight. There are groups booked all May, June and through next year. It is a pain so we rebooked for next April. Hopefully we will be able to go then.
