Favorite fish of 2022

2022 ended up being a pretty good year. The most of the fishing wasn't fast or furious, but size and quality were good this year. This ongoing drought conditions forced me to try new locations, which was cool to find new fishing holes. Exploration is one of the itmes which makes fly fishing fun for me.

Two fish stand out for 2022. The Golden Trout since it was my first Golden and the not so easy journey to catch it, plus my daughter making the hike with me to go get it. I was almost skunked until the last moments of the trip - had to figure out how to catch them.

The second was a personal best Tiger that I caught - good fight, I didn't know Tigers jumped until I caught this bad boy.

What's most memorable for me in 2022 are a couple of trips I made with grandson Chase. First up is a nice LCT taken on our inaugural trip to Pyramid with my buddy Dan. The second is Chase's first ever tidewater spring chinook. I can't wait to see what 2023 has in store for us

ive caught my biggest brown there…
Not the biggest fish of the trip, but the best take. The water in the background is an unnamed meadow stream a few hundred yards in length connecting two lakes. The surrounding bog is super spongy and any movement will put down the fish. I crept around 70 feet upstream of the last rise and then shook out line and a size 14 foam beetle which took 3 or 4 minutes given how little current there was. His larger buddy shadowed him for most of the fight.

2022 was a fun year. Was able to fish a lot and target some species I have not in the past. At least with a fly rods.

I’ll start with freshwater.

Lots of trout. Lakes and rivers.

My biggest lake trout ever. Caught casting a Dalai Llama at the mouth of a feeder creek in AK.

Some solid river rainbows. Also in AK. A couple of many.

Back home, some nice lake bows and coastal cutts. The bow in the net topped 25 inches.

Also specifically targeted warm water species with a fly rod for the first time this year.

Saltwater is where I spent most of my time. It’s what’s close to home. Another solid year fishing Puget Sound! Bring on 2023!

Lots of SRC. Love these guys.FE21D239-8F93-4773-A480-C3820C60DAEF.jpeg
