Coho Fishing SW Washington

We fished several times this week and needless to say it was a blast. With the Chum dying out and the Coho taking their place this is a special time of year in Southwest Washington. Generally speaking these B Run Coho are beyond eager to take a fly! However with low and clear waters, it's crucial to move at a deliberate pace. If youre headed out this weekend we are supposed to get a little rain tomorrow but if the rivers dont jump patience is key as you navigate these smaller systems. Chum salmon may not be easily spooked, but coho are a different story. Approach each hole slowly and if you can stay behind brush or logs do so. Bring an assortment of flies, varying not only in size but more importantly in weight. Experiment with different weighted flies to explore various depths of water and drop rates this was key. Don't forget your sink tip! A sink tip can be a game-changer. We forgot ours on this last trip and even with a spawn super bead, adding a bit of tungsten putty above the fly on a swivel helped us reach deeper pools where the big coho were hanging out! Overall fishing this week and into the weekend should be phenomenal. Our bigger SW Washington systems will have a bunch of people at them but if youre willing to hike, or kayak into smaller systems ohh will you be rewarded!
