Be Advised: Multiple Rock Falls Yakima River Canyon Road (WA 821)

Bailed on our campsite at Big Pine tonight amidst the worst lightning and rainstorm I’ve seen in this area (and there have been some doozies). Strikes on the canyon rims every 3-5 seconds, blowing rocks onto the roadway.

Big rockfall a mile south of Red's, dozens of football-sized rocks across all lanes, and multiple smaller rockfalls between Reds and milepost 24 that require lots of dodging--often hidden around tight turns.

Go slow and be safe.

Anyone else remember the floods of 1996 that closed the canyon road in many places and created the two big deltas in the river on the east (road) side in the upper canyon. One of them created the opportunity for a new launch that remains is common use today. That same storm wiped out the Klickitat river canyon road and took out a bridge; it was closed for months.
