Non-Fly Bassin

Outside of some popper fishing on the fly rod, I do the VAST majority of my bass fishing with gear rods. This is mostly because I have never had the patience or interest in fishing lakes with a fly rod. Big respect to all those guys who do around here, but it's just never been my thing (interestingly enough, I feel the exact opposite about moving water, where I virtually only use a fly rod).

Senkos, ned rigs, soft swimbaits, and spinnerbaits are my most used bass lures.

Just so guys know it's game on time..
Last weekend there was a small tournament out of hood river. 11 boats over half the field had 5 fish limits over 15 lbs one limit was nearly 20lbs.

Point is big fish bite is right now on the mid-Columbia.

Not an expert, but I use gear on them sometimes. Swim baits and Senkos are all I've messed with much, and they work quite well. I have found flies (particularly Clousers) to be as or even more effective on the mostly smaller fish we have locally, but when you're fishing heavy cover for big fish that aren't looing up, weedless gear presentations (think Texas rigged worm and crayfish baits) are often the rule.

Fished with one of my daughters this morning. She started off with three to my zero early on. Jerk bait was the big producer again. After I finally caught one on gear, I decided to spend some time throwing a fly. At our second spot I managed three more bass on the @clarkman special I was fortunate enough to adopt. They were small but it was fun. We ended up with 13 by noon when the wind got going.

The highlight of the trip was when I saw a BIG bass chase my lure. I told my daughter there was a huge fish down there. I killed the electric motor and casted back out. She worked hers nearby and Bam! She hooks this beast. He came near the surface then dove below the boat. He dogged her down there for a few before it spit the hooks. I think I was more bummed than she was. I have landed many 5-6lb bass but this was much bigger. I wish she could have boated that beast. She already said we need to go back to that spot again.

To be continued........
