Before Flourocarbon, and when anglers used to use a wire "tippet" section, many anglers would snell the flies to their wire tippet. Some still do this with mono, but it is becoming more rare.

Additionally, the older flies used saddle feathers, which foul easier when tied up at the front of the shank. So tying materials in at the back only is also to help prevent fouling.
I’ve wondered this too (not that I’ve even contemplated tying a tarpon fly). Thanks for the backstory!

Those are plastic heads made by @SpawnFlyFish . I believe these ones are called Calamari Heads. They just slip over the hook and you glue them on. Spawn makes a lot of other really cool heads for baitfish patterns as well. They are definitely worth checking out if you haven't already. Their website is awesome, customer service is great, and they sell a lot of great tying material
Youre a legend! I really appreciate it, they are also currently ON SALE! We are sun-setting our current heads and once they are gone will begin the process of making Spawn Heads Season 3!

Bought some recently, great deal! If you are doing a tuna trip this year, a few spawn head patterns are a must IMO. Easily the most consistent fly I used last year on the troll and casting.

Too soon to start stocking the chum fry box? Last year I had a lot of luck with very sparse ties when I actually found fish actively gorging on chum fry. Three materials and a little red/green marker head (no eyes). Super simple to tie and effective.

Canada

Winged Wet Fly

Hook - Mustad Heritage S80AP
Thread - Red under the body; black head
Tail - Scarlet wool as a short tag
Ribbing - Gold tinsel
Body - Red floss
Hackle - Red
Wing - Mottled gray turkey

* The written recipe for the Canada lists a tip of ‘scarlet tag’ but it is more accurately a tail.

By standard definition this fly has no ‘tip.’

A “classic color scheme” for many patterns/fishes… one I like and have had some success with. 😉
