These monthly tying contests are so freaking rad. So much good stuff being shared. Love it.
You got a go to line you like for those bad boys? What sort of presentation? This is the woodsman… similar to the previous pattern I posted but longer shanks and hooks, tail shenk, I use finesse chenille for body and added a few wraps of mallard on each segment. Also add some flex at the head at an angle. This one really kicks side to side.
I should note these aren’t my patterns but just what I’ve been using and tying, particularly for prespawn river smallmouth
well shit, I missed the "subsurface" part of the equation....regardless, I fear you may be right.
I see your senko and raise you a curly tailed grubNot new as I tied these awhile ago. I’ve caught LM and SM of both.
My version on a wacky worm fly tied with hard and silicone tubes and without (braided). I tie them with (cone) and without weight depending how fast I want them to sink. Not fun to cast but give good movement.
Fun to casting at fish you can see and seeing how they react.

Indeed. I also like the sand shrimp pink and orange crawdad color. A friend turned me on to Spawn Fly Fish which is where I purchased it. I know it's a Hairline product, but I dig Spawn. Is that Galaxy Mop Chenille on that white one?
Those are gorgeousI am very new to targeting bass with a fly rod. 2022 was my first year doing so. These are some of the subsurface patterns that worked for me.

Will have a few days in Houston next month so might get a chance to fish these. Murdich minnows with hackle tails.

I agree...I'm liking that ...Great crawdad!
You might need to name that last one "Ja Mon"...
Not too stiff? Thanks! It's strung fuzzy fiber in a dubbing loop. The best material I've found so far to make these heads, it fills up and distribute evenly throughout.
