Snow, I can always deal with. I'm very worried about the freezing rain coming to the tri cities and how that will affect my Christmas morning flight back home. Fingers crossed.

Indeed, weather/roads towards the coast are a real mess. Of all things, I was at Walmart (why?.. WTH) right when the sh*t hit, and came out to the icy gloss of freezing rain. Traffic east was mostly slow and smartly tempered down, and then there were the guaranteed bozos gunning it. Now, I fully understand the desire to get the hell out of the coast ASAP Normally for any reason, but even some speed demon morons surprised me with their deathwish driving.

We are in Cannon Beach for the holidays.
Cold and windy on Thursday, but mostly dry. The walk with the dogs on the beach was fun.
This morning, its warm and quite nice( by comparison)
No freezing rain in this city.

Freezing rain sucks, but it can make for very fast sledding, especially if you have an old school sled with metal runners.

It's a solid sheet of ice here in SE Oly on both gravel and paved surfaces. Don't know why I risked a pratfall going out for the newspaper that hasn't been delivered even yet.

When I woke up, the hummers' feeders were in good shape

My goodness it was pretty out front!


My 135' HF wire dipole antenna had some ice on it but wasn't sagging against the counterweights. It's clear now after a 30 second xmit during the AM regional ECOM net.
The driveway was iced up pretty badly so I used the last of my deicer to try to make a safe path for the milkman. I put a Christmas card with a tip and a dozen homemade cookies in the milkbox for him. I'll try the local auto parts store to replenish the deicer for deliveries expected tomorrow. but glad It's expected to warm up.

garbage day, walked to the enclosure, 2' squares of 'veneer' ice would break and tilt up.
We got 3" of snow last night, the knobbies would free spin on the soid ice underneath when I cleared it.
Have to drive into Bend, not looking forward to it, even though my wifes 20' Forester w/ Michelin Cross Climate 2's is a pretty dependable burro.

It was in the mid twenties around 6 this morning with freezing rain. Dogs freaked when they walked out onto the ice over the top of the snow. It was humorous watching their reaction as they crunched through the surface ice. Still with above freezing air temps the ground and all the surfaces are below freezing so the rain is turning to ice on whatever it lands.

Our message remains to be prepared for an impactful mix of wintry
precipitation and very cold temperatures, including accumulating
freezing rain, through at least Friday. A very cold upper trough
dropping out of Canada is pushing an arctic air mass through the
Columbia Basin which will filter through, and eventually spill over
the Cascades all the way to the Oregon and Washington coast. Surface
pressure gradients strengthen tonight which will produce strong
easterly winds, especially through the western Columbia River Gorge.
Looking at the gradient between TTD-DLS this afternoon, the -5.6 mb
difference is in good agreement with latest models. The NAM and GFS
both show this peaking around -11 to -13 mb from early Thursday
morning through Friday morning. Wow! Winds are going to be gusting
to around 60-80 mph through the western Gorge (possibly to 100 mph
at Crown Point), and expecting gusts to 40-55 mph in the Portland
metro. Have issued a High Wind Warning for the western Gorge, and
will continue to the Wind Advisory through the metro up until the
Winter Storm Warning begins (more info on that follows).

Wind chill values will likely drop down into
the teens and single digits across much of the area, near zero
across the east Portland/Vancouver metro and into the -5 to -15F
range for the Columbia River Gorge. Even colder wind chill values
appear likely across the highest terrain in the Cascades. Will
maintain a Wind Chill Warning for the south WA/north OR Cascades and
a Wind Chill Advisory for the Gorge, greater Portland/Vancouver
metro, south WA Cascade foothills, and the north OR Cascade
foothills. Make sure to keep your pets warm and take any precautions
you may need to take to prevent pipes from bursting. Anyone who is
exposed to the outdoors and is not dressed properly will be at risk
of developing frostbite and/or hypothermia.
