A Z-Man Turd or other ned rig plastics are my go-to smallmouth gear baits. Have also caught walleye and catfish on them. Been trying to develop a fly that would behave the same. That is set vertically on the bottom. Have foam cylinders sitting on my desk from tying Boobies, which led to this prototype "ned rig fly". This one is brown and I will make some in purple, tan, and peacock.
Hook: U104 #4
Weight: 3/16th tungsten bead (silver) + 5 turns .025 lead jammed into the bead
Thread: 140 D UTC
Extension: 25# Super Butt mono doubled over.
Body: Brown Ice Dub Chenille
Floatation: 4 mm foam cylinder black

The Whitlock Fox Squirrel Nymph thorax dubbing gets a lot of use at my desk for adding a bit of multicolor flash to dubbing blends.

I guess this is proof of concept, at least from a orientation perspective. This design would work better with a shorter shank hook or larger foam cylinder. Unfortunately, my #4 hook selection is limited at the moment and larger foam would be proportionate. Anyway, looking forward to seeing of the fish like it.

After seeing Steve Vaughn’s Ned rig fly here is a pearl Superfluke imitation.

Hook: Owner Mosquito #2
Tail: clear hyper flex Reaper tail
Body/flex: clear Ripple ice hair spun in a loop and wrapped
Head: White Bruiser blend. Front portion coated with Solarez flex( or Softex or clear silicone)

Couple of small deceivers size 4. 4 apricot hackles in the back, orange foxtail and apricot dubbing in a dubbing loop for the body. I tied the tail thicker this time because hackles tend to collapse too much in the water giving it too slim of a profile.

Really nice tie on the ned rig fly. How were you able to attach the foam cylinders to the end of the chenille? Id like to copy that pattern if yu dont mind. I just cant figure out the foam part.
