One winter on the Methow, I got all the way there and realized that I had forgotten socks! (I probably just had on some kind of thin girlie socks for the drive.) It didn’t stop me from steelheading though. I had some fleece mittens in my rig and in a pinch, I used them as socks! 😂

Introducing the Mitten Sock:

Those are pretty sweet, you can probably stuff a hand warmer where the thumb goes.

One season when I was a deckhand wr caught a coho with a banana peel.

Last year we tried a few times to catch a lingcod on a whole banana. Hooked two but never landed one.

The whole banana thing is such a dumb scapegoat

I know and fished with some well known WA fishing industry people that are adamant that it is real, I laughed at them as I never believed and I have seen it debuncked too many times.

Crazy considering they are in the top tier of skill, likely in the top 5% good!
I have seen a photo album that would make any fisherman or woman jealous with envy with all the giants these guys rope!

Try taking a banana peel when snorkeling on a reef and you'll see exactly how the fish respond. (Hint: bad idea with exposed skin! Even little reef fish bite!)

I love taking people out on the ocean who believe the banana bullshit. My deckhand the last two years brought a banana every day like clockwork, and at some point would pull it out for a snack, and to produce a "nanner bite". Some people would absolutely freak out.

My standard response was to step out of the cabin and say "You know who believes hananas are bad luck for fishing? People who can't catch fish". Most people would laugh but I've seen more than a few people get a bit butthurt.
Nick, hope to have you on my boat some day, but you can expect to be patted down and to have your bag searched before boarding……

I feel like i should know this….cause wasn’t this discussed on the WFF???….but can someone please explain the banana thing ?

Around 2007 my nephew was in town working on the dam. It had snowed over a foot that day, and was still coming down hard, so we took off from work an hour early. I called him up, and found out he was let off early, too. Meet me at the boat ramp? He agreed, so we pull into the empty boat launch, park my truck so we can sit on the tailgate and spot fish that cruise over the shallow weed beds. I finished gearing up first, and immediately after tying a fly on spotted a fish cruising over the weeds. I made a cast and caught it. My nephew grumbled about not being fair, because he hadn't even finished putting his rod together. I told him he had next fish, I would just watch. As we're sitting there I hear a vehicle approaching, and a cop car pulls up right next to us. I'm surprised it could make it through the snow. The cop gets out, and starts interrogating us about what we're doing there in a blizzard. I told him fishing. It was fairly obvious. We were in waders, and our rods were right there in plain sight. He wasn't buying it. "You can't fly fish in winter. There's no bugs!" I assured him you could. He continued to pester us about what we were "really" doing there, wanted to search our vehicles, and basically accused us of vandalizing the outhouse. The cop was a known douche, a reserve officer for Coulee Dam. I finally got annoyed, and reminded him he was five miles out of his jurisdiction, on the reservation, and he didn't want me to call a cop that was in jurisdiction (mostly all friends of mine).
It wasn't ten minutes after he left, that we spotted one of the biggest rainbow trout I have ever seen cruising over the weed beds. Well over twenty pounds, probably closer to thirty! My promise to let my nephew have the next fish went right out the window. I shoved him into the snowbank and went to make my cast, but my reel was froze solid. I grabbed my nephew's rod, but it was froze up too. I could only watch helplessly as the fish made a lap and swam back into the depths. I helped my nephew out of the snow, and let him know the next one was his...

A couple Yakima stories.
Was launching our raft on the Yakima with a couple buddies. The river was high with summer irrigation.
As we were getting our gear ready a guy pulls up with a kayak on top of his rig. He walks down, looks at the river then asks my buddy “if I launch here, which way should I go?”
My buddy with a straight face says “most people go downstream but you can go upstream if you’d like”.

I was fishing with my ex-FIL and his buddy on the lower Yak.
Super windy day but the hopper fishing was great. This lead to some frenzy casting as I was rowing. About halfway through the float, my FIL drilled a hopper into my earlobe. Shortly afterwords his buddy put one into my arm. I happened to have a solid white fishing shirt on which ended up with blood on my shoulder and arm.
When I hopped out of the boat at Rosa, it was a zoo with people. Two gals in bikinis were lying there as I came walking up past them to get the rig. The look on their faces was priceless when they saw my bloody shirt. They were like WTF happened to you or is this a serial killer?
