Loose seam tape

I have a Simms guide jacket, maybe ten years old, and the seam tape is starting to come loose on the back of the neck. Do I just glue it back down with aqua seal, or something else? Or wait until spring and see if I can send it in?

That’s what I would do. You can use aqua seal if you have it, or Seam Grip.

First try sealing it back down with an iron at low heat. Then try adhesive if that doesn’t work.

PhilR,

I would call or email, Simms. If you try to fix it, it may void any warranty. They would also probably give you advice on how to fix it if it is out of Warranty. 10 years of hard use is pretty impressive these days.

Good luck.

I had the exact same thing happen on the same jacket (really old guide jacket). The seam tape along the shoulders that crosses behind the neck came loose.

I did call Simms and they told me that it wasn't warranty, the seam tape eventually fails due to sweat and oils.

That’s exactly where it is. I’ll call and get some help from the experts.

The irony is that I pointed to the jacket and told my wife that it was one of the best investments I’ve made. And then I saw the loose tape…

I wear a Simms Guide jacket, purchased in 2003, that had a few inches of seam tape start to come loose after about 8 or 10 years of use. (Where the hood meets the neck). I used Aquaseal, sparingly. It hasn't come loose at all since then. I wear it 10 to 50 times per year.

The only other repair I've had to do is replace a couple of Velcro patches on the storm flap that covers the front zipper.

This jacket is now 20 years old, and is still bombproof, even bushwacking in our torrential Vancouver Island rains. It has never leaked, and it's also still breathable. Mind you, I follow Simms' maintenance instructions (washing and renewing DWR). But I'm from an older generation, so I grew up taking very good care of my stuff. It's just a matter of respect; respecting the immense amount of time, energy, materials, and cost that bring products to us. I just don't understand today's throwaway consumerism. (End of social commentary!)

I love this wading jacket. I've looked at the newer "Classic" Guide Jacket, and would not buy one. It has less cargo capacity than the original Guide jacket. No way could it carry what I need for my walk and wade fishing. It lacks the huge back cargo pocket, the chest pockets are smaller, has only one (smaller) inside pocket (instead of two larger), and no longer has the built-in retractors that tuck in beside the front chest pockets. I believe it's also now made in Asia, instead of USA or Canada. My Simms jacket was made in Canada, and my Simms Guide waders made in USA.

Still a great investment. 10 years is pretty damn good! Gorilla tape is really sticky.

Dave I did the same with my orvis sonics...pays to have a backup of everything 👍
