Hats as a random conversation starter?

Any sort of fish byproduct adds a certain cachè unavailable any other way.

The older the hat the better
Borderline filthy and threadbare being the best.
:)
I can identify with that quality concept. So I wore my Kamchatka hat until it was literally falling apart. I gave it up at that point and bought a new "lucky" fishing hat from the Steamboat Inn while fishing there last winter.

Philosophically I'm opposed to legible clothing, due to it being considered lower class as recently as the 1980s. But for certain attire it's nigh on impossible to find legible-free fishing hats, hoodys, and waders any longer. They want us, the customer, to pay for the opportunity to provide them with free advertising. It used to be that legible clothing and most anything else was given away free to get people to advertise products and services.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on striking up a conversation with a stranger because you see they are wearing a fly fishing related hat? I’ll add, a pretty specific type of hat. Echo, Spawn Flyfish, Rio, Sage, PNW Flyfishing, a fly shop…

If I’m in line somewhere and the person next to me has such a hat on I usually start a conversation (if they don’t look overly grumpy). Sometimes it’s awkward and it appears they are annoyed by my pestering them about their hat (usually Spey Bros ;) ). But most of the time it turns out positive.

What do you guys do in similar situations?

I would start the conversation by asking if you just bought a new hat because all those look like you've never worn them. If when it's raining the liquid that drips off of your hat looks like weak coffee then you know it is seasoned perfectly.

Wearing a Mariners hat in other countries or states will sometimes start a conversation with a stranger.

Most of my fishing hats are sticky and make my head itch. Not sure anyone would want to talk to me while I was wearing one of those.

I keep mum and pray they don't follow me to the river...
I say "What's up MFer!! Let's see if you can fish!" Of course I'm the GOAT and very humble... the guy in the bathroom mirror told me so! They usually run away screaming, sometimes call the cops.. but I'm down river by that time! Ok, I haven't moved.. I'm in the chair smoking...

Or they recognize me and I share my whisk(e)y and cigars with them.. the more likely occurence!

I saw a guy yesterday at Safeway in Pueblo with a STLHD shirt, I almost said ,"nice shirt"

This thread got me looking at my most used hats....and they do look like used coffee filters....sweat stains, dirt, sun bleached and usually all of them got dumped in the water. They all get blown off my head....especially out on a boat or swinging flies on a really windy day...I like looking up at the mountains and the swallows flying around too much. Add to that, I'm relatively short and most of my friends are over 6'3". I'm a sucker for the "Hey look! A helicopter" while making our way back to the harbor or boat launch.
I buy a hat from just about every fly shop I step into....a lot of hats!

I'll damn near talk to anybody. I was driving down the Mt loop highway one time going down from Barlow pass. There was a guy changing a tire abut had a ly rod sitting against his car. I stopped and started to just talk to him and I asked if he was having any luck. He just took out his fly rod as it was over his spare. So I also gave him a stimulator and told him they liked that fly on the Sauk.

I wanted to add this. I wear a ball cap that has a Brown trout with the words Old Man on it. I have a few caps like that in several colors. Orange, Black and Tan.

When I see folks with TU hats on, I thank them as a general rule. Membership dues don't pay my salary, but it's nice to know there's a bunch of like-minded folks out there.

Thanks for posting, I just saw that you had these available for sale. I just put in an order for an old man hat plus a set of PNW stickers..:)
Now to find out if our shipping setup knows what to do for Canada :-/

Edit: Nevermind, I see you're shipping to a USA address :D
