Eastbound I-90 reopens near Ellensburg after 30-vehicle collision

There were 18 cars and 12 semitrucks involved in the crash.

Is it me or has this been a bad start to the I-90 gateway to the other side...

Few years ago I signed up for WSDOT app and traffic alerts on certain HWYS and I-90 being one. I swear since early November my phone bings every other day alerting me to closures on I-90, some full and others involving multiple lane, accidents, etc. I was dinged this am but didn't really read it, then I saw this...

Now I don't know but I know a few people who live on the other side and they say over the past couple of years that there has been a big turnover in personnel on the road crews and the newer workers don't seem to be as efficient as before (in clearing the hwy and the amount they can clear)
 
I signed up for the alerts 5 years ago. It’s not unusual to see closures around Snoqualmie Pass several times a week all winter. My take from making the trip back and forth in some pretty bad conditions…Lots of people seem to be in a big hurry. When the road is a sheet of ice, slow down maybe? Also, chains required means just that.

I think that car commercials where you see a Subaru flying through deep snow - throwing up a cloud of powder or a Ford F250 4X4 screaming up a mountain side or Jeep roaring over a snowy pass convinces many drivers that their damn 4x4 or AWD are invincible, can stop on a dime, can go around a curve on ice at the posted speed limit.

I was disappointed with the Cosmic Crisp, it's good... but... still not to Honeycrisp levels of good. I actually like the Opal apples if you can find a firm crisp batch. Now for the life hack, you can get Honeycrisp apples for the price of Fuji or whatever else is on sale, just memorize the 4 digit code and punch it in at self checkout, boom .99 cent Honeycrisps. Yes I know this is technically stealing but that's what they get for forcing me through self checkout with no other checkers on duty.

It's not a life hack, it's deliberate theft. Aren't we better than this?
 
I was disappointed too....the cosmic crisp came across a little to sweet. Ill admit some of the best honey crisps I ever bought was from the Thorp fruit stand about 2-3 years ago. They were medium to smallish is size for the most part, not the prettiest because they had not received a store display shine screen coating and a few had some coloring blemishes that did not affect the feel or taste. They were in bins and you picked them out and filled your crate/basket/box or whatever it was. Those were some of the best Honey Crisp apples I have ever had.
Fuji's are a decent back-up...Still like a Granny Smith from time to time.

My new update received moments ago states that I-90 Eastbound in Kittitas will not re-open until later tonight. Use Detour alternate local roads.

This. The availability of all wheel drive has created in the minds of the temperate weather driver an illusion of total body armor. Usually after the first couple snows, folks around these parts have spent enough time in the ER and the body shop waiting room that they figure out the program. Hopefully they don't take someone else with them.

The Program:

Dear Pugetopolis drivers (and all others who need the reminder): You can drive in the rain and the dark at 75 MPH 5 feet behind the guy in front of you on I-5 every day if you want. When you come up on the pass and over here to snow country, understand: All wheel drive helps you go. It does not keep you on the road or help you stop. 4 wheel drive gets me way deeper in the ditch than you could get with 2WD. If you're in a hurry on snowy roads, especially snowy roads with lots of cars and trucks, you're going to make it to the nearest hospital quicker than anywhere else. Get out of a hurry. Everyone over here knows it's snowy, you can be late.

When there's snow on the road, slow the f*^$k down for conditions. There's enough idiots out there, you don't need to be one.

And if you must be an idiot, pass a snowplow on the right. Get it over with.

The "all others" encompasses folks east of the Cascade Mountains - we too need reminders. Two weeks ago with the first real snow that fell on top of freezing rain slicked roads, it was a challenge getting back to Ephrata from Wenatchee (> 2 hours). IDIOTS. I must admit seeing a brand new Toyota Tundra blatantly run a red light then try to make a hard left hand turn then slide and crash that brand new Toyota Tundra into a light pole was somewhat entertaining.
 
How do you know who had 4WD on when you see a winter wreck? Look for the ones way further off the road..

4WD and AWD is great for going, but does little for stopping, when it's slick. Most people don't realize which of the above is the more important one in the winter.
