Club Pros and Cons

I met some of my oldest and closest fishing buddies at the first meetings of a fly club. We never had a lot of members but we did become a influential group that had an impact on some fishing regulations. We only ran into problems when a core group of guys seemed to keep the club going and others thought that core group had too much power.

The best approach I've ever heard is at the McKenzie Flyfishers in Eugene. When you joined you were informed that part of the membership meant that, at some point, you would be President of the club for one year. Everyone had the same responsibility. In this way the officers were always changing and no one felt put out.

But if you can stay out of the politics (unless you're so inclined) you will find a gold mine of fishing buddies, fly tying friends and mentors .... 80% of what I know about flyfishing I got from club members.

No clubs, but have joined various conservation groups, etc. Great way to meet like-minded people... some of whom have boats!
To me the conservation efforts are one of the most important reasons to belong to a club or conservation group.
If a person gets involved in some of the projects like those that @Guy Gregory described some good comraderie and friendships often result.

Nearly every one of my fishing buddies were met through forums. Here, the old place and the now defunct Westfly. Some of my best friends have risen out of that group as well.
