Tuna 2022, let the games begin!

A friend stopped by my desk today and said he had a treat for me. They ballon fished with flying fish as bait in SoCal, I may have to give this a go in the future but the pics he showed put these fish in the 150lb class. Not sure if there are any fly guys targeting these but on my bucket list.12B0F87B-C620-4479-B145-83FC927351D2.jpegD9D25217-AD1B-45CC-B1AA-92EAFCBBEDA8.jpeg

Fishing was absolutely ridiculous today. 37 miles from the jetty for me, but one of our boats loaded up at 33 miles and another charter plugged at 29 miles. Wouldn't be surprised if some salmon fishermen got wrecked today.
Nick, I think you do need to do a little better job managing expectations. I do prefer at least a little sleep next Tuesday night for Wed tuna fishing... No need to make this more difficult than it already is.

I was trying to put together a 3 day trip out of SanDiego for blue fin on the fly but could not get any one to show any interest

My fishing booty call for today turned into a call for tomorrow...and I just heard the bite died today. I hope @Nick Clayton checks in with a report from today with better results!

Yum!

I read somewhere theres a small boat charter out of SD that will chase tuna with fly rods. Can't imagine they'd be targeting the "cows" though.

I want a bluefin bad. 50#'s on fly gear? - hell yeah. 150#'s on fly gear? - HELL NO! ..... OK, maybe just to feel the grab and peel off 500yds before breaking it off.

On a barely related note, they've been catching unusually large #'s of Dorado down there lately. With our current offshore conditions I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing a few up here soon.

The bite in one zone died, but after a 20 mile run we found it again. Would love to have had fly guys on board. Tons and tons of jumpers, TONS of mackerel, and an insane amount of tiny saurie that both the macks and the tuna were feeding on.

I did manage to catch a large mackerel on the popper which was pretty fun.

Fly fishing the next two days. Can't wait.

I need to find out which boat that is the willing to cater to fly rods. My friend that gave me the loin offered to let me tag along next year which I would love to do. That is some serious groceries I had shasimi and seared tuna today which is awesome.

We're talking jack mackerel, not the green striped Pacific (true) mackerel?

Try theflystop.com they offer offshore flyfishing for bluefin in San Diego $1200/day up to three anglers
Looks like it’s $900 for an 8 hour trip with up to four anglers, and $1200 for an 11 hour day with up to four. Hell of a deal. Am calling tomorrow to see if that's 4 fly anglers or just 3 fly anglers
