Winter Olympics Watch...

Beijing averages 1 day of snow a year for an accumulation of 0.3". Might as well let Ober Gatlinburg, TN host the 2030 games.
I don't get it, what am I missing? Some weird places.

As always with the Olympics there will be some personal glimpses into the humanity and goodness of some of the young athletes that will be both inspirational and compelling. Those moments truly bring out the very best that sports at any level has to offer. Will be watching the performances of some of the kids from my former home towns and hoping they can achieve their goals regardless of what they might be.

Yup. For me the Olympics is more of a story about people. Most of them are maybe paying their bills through the sport they compete in but have mostly put their life on hold for a chance at competing against the very best in the sport they love.

I'll mostly watch online because I like the obscure sports and could care less about figure skating which gets the vast majority of the coverage. Same way summer Olympics are dominated by gymnastics.

I love the winter Olympics. I will watch all I can, but especially cross country skiing and ski jumping. I'm skeptical about China and the fake snow.

Maybe I am prejudice against the current state of the country of China and maybe to a degree sports in general but I have never had as little interest in the Olympics in my life.
For those that are into it though I hope there's lots of great competition for you to watch..
You are freaking me out man. Are you being like NICE?

I used to love watching the Olympics back in 60's through 80's before all the professionals started playing. Then all the judging issues began and continue IMHO. So I watch competitions based on timing/clock. times. I watch to see an unknown come out of no where to exceed any dream they ever had.

But last night politics and human rights became a theme. I watch the Olympics to get away from that BS. No more Olympics for me this year...

For a country that warned other countries and athletes against making any political statements; they sure made a political statement at the lighting ceremony. I have no interest in their form of sport or government.

Just wish the Olympics went back to olden days…showcase the sports, the athletes, and how the countries/teams/athletes got there. I wished it was amateur athletes and no politics, but we all know both those ships have sailed.

I'm not s pro sports guy. In fact most of my love for sport surrounds individual sports. I do love the Olympics however. I love the idea of the world coming together to compete. I love the fact that some of the finest most talented athletes from all over the planet converge and ply their craft against the best of the best. The Olympics are what sport and the best of what it is to be an international athlete. I think it sucks they are in China though. The games are generally non political. Though there was a games in Berlin where an American Jesse Owens showed a fascist leadership what was up. Probably one of my all time great moments in sport history. Four gold medals if I remember correctly. Four. Jesse Owens is a complete badass. What a symbolic victory socially and physically. The only reason I would tune into the Chinese games is to watch for such a character to emerge and repeat history on a world stage. There's almost no opportunity for an athlete to change the world or make history. Jesse did it. How awesome would it be if someone did it again here and now in China.

The old straw brooms were the best - no one uses them any more, they should make it a rule that you have to use straw corn brooms

cheers
a couple nights a week I practice with a corn broom on my kitchen floor

The Olympics are ostensibly intended to be a non-political gathering of international community. However there have been political overtones at least as far back as 1936. 1968, 1972, 1980, 1981, 1984, and now 2021 come to mind.

In 1972 German citizens provided logistical support to Palestinian terrorists and the German government's response, including the release of the two surviving terrorists following the hijacking of Lufthansa Flight 615 without consulting Israel, was completely inept.

Since 1981 Taiwan has not been allowed to present itself as a sovereign state, and must compete under the name "Chinese Taipei".

In 2021 mention by CNN that there has been retaliation against Japanese (and other?) athletes by "Chinese nationalists" for defeating Chinese athletes.

There have been a lot of controversial actions and decisions that been politically or nationalistically motivated.

Hahaha about Curling @Canuck from Kansas ! (Of course! You might be the only one here who loves that event.)
I love the short track too and the ice skating. Not much for the summer Olympics but i do love the Winter Olympics. I need to bone up and find out some of the characters of these Olympians. I loved it when there were athletes with stories like (off the top of my head) Mark Spitz, Bode Miller, Tomba, Tanya Harding, Apollo Ono, Simone Biles, etc. Much like how i like to watch the NFL.

... or what will you be watching?

Not sure about the rest of you folks, but I much prefer the winter Olympics over the summer. I just find the there are more compelling events. I'll be keeping a close watch on men's and women's Biathalon and X-country skiing, long and short track speed skating, bob sledding and luge, hockey, of course, all of the skiing and ski jumping events, and finally, the marquis event and every man and woman's favorite, CURLING (have a beer after you throw that rock!!!!!)

Go Canada!!!

cheers

Men's downhill and women's GS tonight - hoping for Canadian gold, but otherwise, I will be rooting for Ms Shiffrin.

Cheers
