Almost learned a very hard lesson yesterday

Guess it's time for my annual

"Hey, just letting you guys know because I've seen the wardens around here" then going off and calling it in

suggestion.
I'm more passive. I just call it in and leave. Especially if I don't have my gun. Ran into too many tweakers and toothless Jim Bob's on the river to engage...even if I'm carrying.

But I can appreciate Travis being direct. Respect.

Agreed. Much respect to Travis for doing the right thing. It sucks that mob mentality has returned us to this type of society.

That said I’d be even less likely to confront somebody if I was carrying a gun. Actually shooting someone is a horror I wish in nobody.

Absolutely. A gun (or as is quite likely in this case and many others, guns on both sides of the "discussion") is not going to make this situation any better.

That is absolutely unacceptable behavior regardless of who was in the right, but to me it looks like the creek is open -

Open fourth Sat in May through March 31 subject to low flow. Per CDFW:

7.40(b)(77) Redwood Creek (Humboldt Co.). Also see Section 8.00(a) Low-Flow Restrictions.
(A) Redwood Creek main stem, within a radius of 200 yards of its mouth. Jan. 1 through Mar. 31. Only artificial lures with barbless hooks may be used. 2 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead**. 4 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead** in possession.
(B) Redwood Creek main stem, from 200 yards above the mouth to the mouth of Prairie Creek. Fourth Sat. in May through Mar. 31. Only barbless hooks may be used. 2 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead**. 4 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead** in possession.
(C) Redwood Creek main stem, from the mouth of Prairie Creek to the mouth of Bond Creek. Fourth Sat. in May through Mar. 31. Only artificial lures with barbless hooks may be used. 2 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead**. 4 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead** in possession.

Flow info below (but not currently subject to low flow closure as I read the regs)

It’s subject to a low flow closure, which supersedes the ordinary regulations. I confirmed it with the warden. There’s a low flow hotline you’re supposed to call.

But yes, it's confusing as hell the way it's written. The warden told me it was closed when I called it in (after I had been run out of the camp).

Did the warden head down there? Assuming theyre as understaffed as up here in OR/WA?

My style is to assume they do not know the regulations and to politely inform them. Recently I saw a couple fisherman catch a kelt steelhead while springer fishing, and proceed to take pictures and generally mishandle the fish. I approached them as they finally released it and let them know that while it was a very cool catch that I was jealous of, there are laws regarding the handling of steelhead and they had broken them.

They were super cool and appreciative and had clearly been ignorant to what was happening (they thought it was a king).

The plan for finding someone intentionally or maliciously breaking the rules is to approach the same way, and if any hostility is encountered I back away, say "I'm just hoping to keep this season from being shutdown" and get back to the rig where I call officer Jones.

No fish, no season no river is worth the potential consequences of challenging a pissed off redneck with something to lose or prove.

I'm not sure. By the time I calmed down a bit and called, it was around 2 AM Sunday. They said they would go down Sunday and check it out but they didn't provide any followup to me.

This is one of the reasons I fish alone. I try to stay away from everybody. Not looking to upset any apple carts.

There was a little lake that had a catch and keep season, then later in summer there would be a C&R season.
During the C&R season I would always carry my pistol.
One afternoon one of the other members and I went up to this little lake.
There was a group of gentlemen catching and keeping.
First I went up in the parking lot and took pics of the lic plates then took pics of the group and even ask if I could take pics of them holding up their catch they hadn't eaten, they agreed to have their pic taken.
Then I told'em they were breaking the law and I had already called the law. I could not call, no signal.
These guys just left all their gear and catch, ran out of there like their ass was on fire.
Other people that were on the other side of the lake packed up and left also.
My friend said "Gary, we now have the lake to ourselves"
We fished until dark and C&Red many nice size tigers and RB's
I miss fishing with that friend.

Hmmm - I think the warden was wrong. The low flow closure applies Sept-April.

ARTICLE 4. SUPPLEMENTAL REGULATIONS 8.00. LOW-FLOW RESTRICTIONS. (a) Eel River, Mad River, Mattole River, Redwood Creek, Smith River and Van Duzen River. Stream closures: Special Low Flow Conditions. From September 1 through April 30, any of the stream reaches listed in subsection (1) through (7) below shall be closed to all angling on Tuesday and Wednesday when the department determines that the flow on the previous Monday at any of the designated gauging stations is less than the minimum flows set forth in subsections (1) through (7)

If that's not the right reading, put me in the camp for the regs needing a major overhaul. If it is the right reading, the regs still need a major overhaul as the people responsible for knowing the law are not up to speed.

Did you call the low flow hot line to see if there is an update, low flows can happen anytime of year, this kinda sounds like our emergency regulations?

No poaching confrontation is worth a life or a kicked ass. Someone posted why they fish alone. I do a lot but some areas I will not. Some areas I use to fish I will not go back alone because of questionable characters I ran in to that didn't come across as REI patrons or fishing people. And the ones with no fish I’ll never go back 😉

Oh I know, you need an attorney to decipher it. I got stopped one time fishing it and got a talking to and the warden was lenient because it’s so damn confusing and contradictory.

Glad to hear things did not escalate any further than they did and you are okay. I hope your daughter was not harmed too much by the experience. I am sorry you had to go through with it.

Some of it's ignorance. A friend and I came across a couple of guys cleaning a "limit" of trout from a lake that had a 1 over 18" regulation. They seemed pretty nice and my friend mentioned it to them. They just assumed the lake was like the other put and take lakes. Other times it's due to cultural differences and even with educating them, it's hard to change their mindset. Other folks just do not give a shit and will do what they want. A friend of mine visited the lake a week ago. Besides the 1 over 18" limit, it is also selective gear rules. A bunch of Russian families were fishing with bait and keeping everything they caught. I am also guessing they were fishing in a section that was closed to fishing.

It is a tough decision on whether to confront or report. I do applaud your passion.
