Well, we made it to North Carolina ... God it's hot, but it's the humidity that will kill me. Driving in NC, we spent 2 nights outside Winston-Salem, thought it might be where we would settle. Then we decided to have look further east, closer to the coast, New Bern... God it's hot. Anyways, I digress, we have found a place, made an offer and looks like it will be accepted, we're closing on the ninth August... God it's hot though. New Bern is at the confluence of the Trent an Neuce rivers, downstream in many ways resembles Puget sound, although more brackish water, it is big, influence by tides and lotsa feesh, I will have to switch everything over to salt.

Did I mention it's hot ...

cheers

Man, I wish I coulda fished with you again before you left. Please keep us updated on the amazing fisheries you're sure to find.

It's that Bermuda High and the damn humidity, things will cool down when the hurricanes start up.

;)

Hi CfK,
I lived in nearby Greenville, NC for nine years. New Bern is a cool town; as the former capitol of North Carolina, it has many historic buildings. There is a run of stripers and shad in the Neuse River. The rivers also have a variety of centrarchids. You can flyfish for red drum, speckled trout, and several flounder species in the nearby Pamlico Sound. You are about an hour away from the hub of coastal and offshore fishing in this region of NC, Morehead City / Atlantic Beach / Beaufort. Here you can fish for Spanish and king mackerel, and little tunny from the surf off Shackleford Banks or Cape Lookout or from small boats. Offshore, you have access to billfish, tuna, and a variety of bottom fish. Folks in coastal NC LOVE fishing, though fly fishing is not a common strategy - lots of opportunities.
Yes, the humidity will take some adjusting... But winters are short and fishing is a 10-month a year pursuit. Visit Ocracoke when you catch your breath.

I read the "hot and humid" part. To hell with the fishing. I'd love to visit - in the spring, of course - but you couldn't pay me to move to Tar Heel country, no offense to Tar Heels, but they sure chose a hideous climate. No wonder so many moved to Washington. Take care and best wishes Canuck, but why on earth why?

Congrats on the house & thankful for a safe trip.

How’s the weather down there?? 🤪

That is a wonderful part of the country. Hopefully you will adapt and climatize. I did, when I moved from the Carolinas to the Northwest, so hopefully you will too. I’m not sure which 2 months Cabezon is implying not to fish but if you travel a little bit there’s 12 months to fish, just like the PNW.

You just go for it, don't you?

Welcome to NC! I fish year-around here. My favorite is chasing false albacore and other finned critters on fly off of the southern OBX out of Beaufort or Bardens inlets mid Sept - mid Dec, and you'll be in awe of the beauty and multitude of life within 3 miles of the beach in the fall. And, you'll be close enough to cherry-pick the best weather days to get after 'em (any wind direction that has an "N" in it).

Good luck with the move!

Closer to kids and hopefully grand kids - seems it's always for the kids.

My wife wanted to move to Montana to be close to most of her kids. Well we got here and the damn kids moved back to Washington. I asked her if she wanted to move back there and I got a big fat no fucken way. She likes it here no matter that the winters are so long. I feel the same way. We can both drive in the snow. Except the hot summers are a bit to hot for me lately. I'd hate for the heat to put me down. So I don't go out in it.

... I'm concerned that down here, it is the kind of heat where "wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks" (Raymond Chandler). Though that was a dry Santa Ana heat and the wife does seem to like the humidity, I am staying alert, just in case.

cheers
