And I made it home. Good advice as right as I was leaving they were closing down the fishing access where I was camped.

Not sure how many other folks even tried fishing today but for the record, I did rope a hog. Ate a salmon fly nymph near the bank. We are close!

Unfortunately this is going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better. People are stuck, many are homeless, and many business will suffer as we are just starting the peak of tourist season.

Gardenir is cut off due to flooding and washed out roads. The repairs are going to take a long time. Some of the ariel news footage is quite impressive.
 
Sounds like Cooke city and west Yellowstone both picked up around 3” of rain in 24 hrs. That comes on top of runoff and all of the other rain we’ve received the past few weeks. It really was a perfect storm.

I think that was the Tom Miner bridge, north of Gardiner near Carbella, that connects Hwy 89 to the Old Yellowstone Trail road.

We better pray there is no damage to the Hwy there, or elsewhere between Gardiner and Livingston, or all of the people who are presently stranded in Gardiner will really have a heck of a time getting out.

I wonder how long they can survive in Gardiner and in Mammoth without having supplies being air lifted in (or airlifting them out).

Mammoth should be fine as the Mammoth to Norris to West roads haven't had any damage as far as we know. Mammoth can be supplied from West. Gardiner should be fine as well. The waters are receding on the Gardiner and Yellowstone rivers, and it doesn't appear that there's been any significant damage to Hwy 89, just flooding over the road. The two towns that are in most peril are Cooke City and Silver Gate. They can be accessed arduously from the East via Cody or Red Lodge in the warmer summer months, but not in winter. With the Soda Butte washout it's going to be a tough time for those folks if it does not get fixed this summer.

The biggest economic impact is going to be in Gardiner as they've lost all access to the park. Not much reason to stay there if you can't get into the park. Additionally, a great deal of the park's administrative and maintenance facilities, including construction equipment are in Gardiner which is now cut off from the park. Makes necessary maintenance and repair that much more difficult.

From an angling perspective, there is some probability that the NPS might close off or restrict access to the Lamar Valley to facilitate repairs to campgrounds and roads by keeping tourists out. The Yellowstone River bridge at Tower is already under re-construction and it remains to be seen what damage the flood may have done to that bridge. The route to the Lamar now has to go through Mammoth or Canyon via Dunraven Pass--a long drive from West.

It's going to be an interesting and challenging summer for the NPS.

My point is it wasn’t the location you were spooked on about the dam 🙃🤓 different drainages. I worked them so I corrected it, excuse me if this touched you personally.

Btw people are going up n down the Gallatin road w/o discourse or reason yet to do so. Let’s not overspook people on an already sensitive topic. That road is a HUGE throughway for necessary fundamentals of life for many people.
