Up Sac and Low Sac

I frigged up my knee playing soccer, at 34 but thinking I’m 20. It was going to happen eventually. I live in Humboldt county, CA. Cheaper and better MRI services are available in Redding, I’m scheduled for tomorrow, and weather in Humboldt was terrible. I decided to head over to Redding for the weekend.

I got over and fished the lower Sacramento. Wind!!!! It was terrible. That’s such a powerful river too, and slicker than snot. I fished about two hours before my knee was screaming.

It was fun getting out but I decided that wading was a very stupid idea with the shape my knee is in. I figured tomorrow I should head up to Lassen Park or Burney and paddle around in the kayak.

I checked the weather in the morning and snow everywhere at higher elevations. I can put up with the cold and I broke in a new “fishing rig” but I didn’t want to chance the snow.

So I decided to head to the upper Sacramento River. Shasta lake is incredibly low, and I guess it only has water right now due to these last storms. The weather here is crazy and it’s going to be another awful fire year.

Speaking of crazy weather, I fished in the sunshine, while it was snowing, in a t shirt. I was skunked today too, but I didn’t feel good enough to hike far or wade aggressively. I found some good spots and tried nymphing, streamers, soft hackles, everything I could. Reports were that the weather had put down the fish, so I didn’t feel too bad with the skunking. I was limited but I still got out and had a good day in a gorgeous spot

Wading with a sketchy knee is a bit terrifying, and I’m not old (34–your age). I tore my miniscus pretty bad and waded a whole summer on it and it was rough for the first month, it calmed down and I was able to get through to the winter for a quick clean up.

Man, I love the burney area. My most memorable fish ever was a like 10” wild rainbow below the falls, upstream of the rainbow bridge. I was wearing my daughter in a sling (5 months at the time) and she was napping. I was fishing all the likely pocket water and finally got an eat on my Adams on my 3wt. Landed it without waking her up!

Looks like a beautiful area up there! Thanks for sharing. I hope that the MRI has good news and your knee heals quickly!

I was there last month and fished down river of Colusa, bait guys did really well on live bait, for stripers, if you haven't fished for striped bass you need to think twice and go do it, it's a gas. Clouser-type flies with a sinking or floating line will do the trick.

I’m in the MRI waiting room. I decided to go out beforehand and get the knee good and angry. Boooooy was it worth it.

I hooked 5, landed 1. These fish are so big and strong and angry. I suspect this is the smallest fish I hooked.

Gotta get this MRI done and get back out!!

superb fishery, and some of the best fishing right by the easily accessible bridge waters...strongest bow's around due to that current..Lassen Park's Manzanita Lake fun fishery for bow's and browns'...the summer boatman hatch at dark there can be wild.
Fall River to the east the states premium blue ribbon fishrey, brutes in spring clear waters....headwaters of it Lake Ahjumawi where double digit bow's roam in U-boat packs. After my first trip there came back with 7 wts.
Ran into Clint Eastwood at the local store in Fall River 30 years ago, buying flies...had a hella sweet pad right on the river...we chatted fishing over a beer on the store porch, than he got into his 50's pickup and motored off...hard not to admire his taste in rivers

The lower Sac is a gem, what other river is such a quality fishery flowing through a town of 100K population? Hoping the flows can be maintained this summer, not looking good.

I fished both the upper & lower Sac last fall...it was very good. Also fished the Fall river...fish were easily spooked, but most were large...

May go back this fall...
I had some good days on the fall. And some very frustrating ones!

the shoulders on those current living bows'...

anyone here old enough to have stayed at Rick's Lodge on the Fall River? Rick would wander in and chose a table of newbies at dinner time, sit down and b.s. with the guests , have several cocktails and his dinner...the guests would later find their tab included his drinks and dinner at full retail...his 'initiation' to the lodge...lol
Was quite the crew there in the 80's, many well known in the CA fly biz...few rivers are so demanding or rewarding ...

Yeah, it turns out the knee is actually intact, but my injury was a femoral stress fracture
I don't really know what I am talking about, but I think maybe that's better than ACL or MCL blowout. Heal fast (from another old dad still playing soccer).

I think it is good news! Soccer, fly fishing, and Ramones, we've got a few things in common. My brother is moving to Washington, we need to get together when I visit!
