UNOFFICIAL NHL 26-27 Season Chat

I very much enjoy watching Olympic hockey on TV and WHL in person, but I'm not a huge fan and it doesn't displace my fandom for other sports. However, now that we're in Pittsburgh, I'm going to try to get a little invested in the penguins. We're gonna try to get to a game or two this winter as well.
Enjoy and let us know about your experience in Pitt.

Pens win! We're assimilating as you can tell from the attire.

Some observations from our first NHL game:
1. We were in the top shelf but the view is still pretty awesome
2. Much easier to follow the puck in person than on TV
3. The puck-stick sound is so much louder than expected
4. There are more stoppages/breaks/ice shoveling than expected
5. It's chilly in there
6. Can't wait to go to another one

To me watching hockey in person is the most exciting and captivating spectator experience of all major sports whether collegiate, professional or, after watching my kids play for years, even junior hockey.
I went to a handful of Thunderbird and Silvertips games and enjoyed them, but this was different, I might be a convert.

Hershey Bears were my introduction. Got interested in the Flyers a bit later because my vocational teacher was from there and eas a big fan. Later in San Antonio, got hooked on the Iguanas and the Dragons. Nowadays, I'll support the Flyers and the Penguins.

One of the wildest fan pairings I know of is a former coworker who grew up in Ketchikan, and is a Bruins fan.

What?! Blasphemy! Where's my virtual battery to throw at you! I completely agree with comment about the sound of a rink. There's nothing like being on or near the ice with top level players. Those guys just rip up rec sheet ice when skating hard. That noted, there's also nothing in the world that smells like an ice rink. I miss it.

I like the calm before the storm of NHL hockey fans. Most are sitting down, low voices, listening to the chatter on the ice....then kaboom the crowd goes wild when there is action at the net.

You are hooked!!!! No releasing this one.

Oh, puhleeze! Living in the center of the state, I have that option. It's far better than cheering for a team from New Yawk
Given the choice, the vast majority of Flyers fans would pull for the Rangers before the Pens. The Pens tanked for years and lucked into generational players again and again. They didn't earn anything. They got lucky - and Flyers fans hate that. Crosby was the best of his generation for 15 years and before that 10 years of Lemieux. Lemieux is the best player I've ever seen and Crosby is in the top 3. I hate saying that.

sorry man, but the flyer's front office has been churning out the same results regardless of the roster since bobby clarke took over. starting with trading one generational talent (forsberg) for another (lindros). they put great teams around lindros, and he was sensational in spite of all the negative hype - which mostly originated from the front office itself.

they've had so many good teams since then, with so many great players worthy of building around. the talent is not the problem, nor is luck.

mario was/is more than just the most talented player on the ice ever to play - he's a superb hockey mind, leader, and business person also. he's run the org as deftly as he ran the ice. that's not luck, it's culture and leadership. that's what the flyers don't have, regardless of who's on the ice. that's why their smaller cross state rivals own them.

and i'd say it's been similar with the oilers since sather left. you can't blame the talent and you can't blame luck, good or bad.
