I ended up with a 9' 9wt Sweetgrass pent 3/1 for a song and took it out with some head systems to try it out. Turns out the guides were a little small for the loop to loop connections. I found the wulff ambush on clearance and took it out today to try. It was a winner compared to what I had tried already. I was worried that the 9wt designation was for true to weight grains but have since figured out that this rod can handle all the newer 9wt lines.. I typically like to carry allot of line in the air but have realized that the weight of these heavier line wt bamboo rods work best with a very short head with only a quick false cast.
For those that have used the ambush lines, How are you setting it up as a floater? Long leader, some sort of tip? For a sinking tip I get it.
Any recommendations for a short head sinking line?
Brought a few small bass in today and hope to land a few salmon or steelhead and saltwater species on this setup.
I heavier rod but letting the rod do the work makes it rather manageable.
