I had one come down in my yard with a broken tree top. He was immobile and damp and measured 6 inches across. I carefully moved him out to the sun and in 20 minutes he recovered and flew away. Hooray!

I've found 2 in my lifetime and count myself lucky. And yeh they get big
 
Beautiful male Monarch. First one I've seen here. Monarchs are rather unpalatable for predators as they accumulate toxins from their host milkweed plants. We at the Canuck Poconos Nature Reserve have planted some Swamp Milkweed along a boggy bank of the outflow creek from our pond, so hopefully more Monarchs next year.
