Watch those scams

our Citibank Mastercard pings our phones with a notice of charge the moment the card is used.

A fukkery from the late 80's - we were down in Costa Rico with the kids, short on Colon's handed over my card after a dinner out in Nosara, went to use my card the following day and it was declined. Called Visa in a sweat being our only card, turned out the limit of $15,000 had been maxed by a purchase of $14,000 in tractor parts..'WTF would I be doing buying tractor parts down here!!!'
Had no card for the rest of the trip, had to jump through hoops to contact Wells Fargo stateside and have them send us money from our savings to cover the rest of the trip. Took over a month stateside to get the charges erased and then promptly dumped Visa.
 
I second the freezing of credit reports, if you don't need to have such a thing active. The guy who handles my retirement $$ strongly recommended this.
 
They are getting real good.

I kept getting scams pretending to be my IP provider. Then I started getting legit notices from my IP provider.

I couldn't tell the difference. I had to call the company to ask which was which, and now I just ignore all their messages. Pretty soon they won't be my provider.

They just got bought out by Bell Canada. They went from a great internet provider to an awful one in just three months of ownership by Bell Canada.

The wholesale internet connection is provided by Chelan County PUD, hopefully, they will start offering retail connections now that the Legislature has finally repealed the law prohibiting counties from offering retail internet, cable TV, and phone service to their owners.

I don't like my money going to Canada.
 
I have getting a lot of texts lately to meet up for dinner or a drink after work, or wanting to know why I have not responded yet, or better yet upload a cute picture they got of me. They act like they are my personal friend. Very nice of them. I wanna let them know they have the wrong number but I’ll just hope they figure it out on their own.
 
I have also been getting a lot of emails and texts like what @Porter2 and @Canuck from Kansas received. Also from banks, credit unions and credit cards I may or may not have... Add to the list: Area code (808) spam calls.

Probably the latest one (new to me) I got was an official looking notice pop-up stating I that I had a virus on my make and model of phone and download an update to my virus protection.

I was playing around with an AI tool. My WiFi router security notified me it blocked a network attack successfully on several occasions.

These are scams to see if the number is active - why are you not responding, are you blocking my number? Do not respond to them.
 
Verifying a number is valid, then scammers bundle and resell the verified valid numbers to other scammers.

There's a whole scammer infrastructure, lot of jobs in scamming, though AI might take some away.

That's what I say.

Don't engage and the scam won't materialize.

Some people have a 'must know/too curious' trait that lures them into the trap....they can't let the call drop, they must answer....they take the bait and think they aren't hooked. SUCKERS!
 
Watch for this one:
Got an Evite the other day that appeared to be from a friend of mine, which is not unusual. It looked legit, but when I clicked it had a Captcha page that was blurry. I closed & deleted, texted the friend - someone had grabbed & used her whole contact list 🤬
No info entered & no phone virus, so apparently caught before any harm.
