So where's the guardrails?

Another thing to keep in mind is that change is here. We just do not know what it is.

The sophistication of scams has increased tremendously in last year or so. I got a couple last week that were so real it almost fooled me. I did an internet search and confirmed my suspicions ---> scams.

There was an adage 'trust, yet verify', no longer. 'Do not trust, and verify from a trusted source' now applies...

Thank God we have members of PNWFF willing to parrot doom scenarios that we have already all read about and watched content from common news resources outside of this fly fishing website. Truly heroic work!

As discussed in the TV thread, some people do not have TVs or only watch sports and an occasional streamed movie. Not sure where people if/when they get their news, nor do I care, but reminders are not a bad thing.

A tv thread?
I must have blocked it as we only watch tv an average of 2 hours a day.

And all this time I thought this site was about fly fishing rather than...............all these words. How about a trip report so we can get back to where the site belongs. Lock it @Evan B ;-)

I talked to Al for a bit yesterday. He said he's sorry for getting everybody worried and has no idea where all this nonsense came from. If you want you can talk to him yourself. He said it was okay to post his contact info:

Good news! Apparently the world media outlets have paid attention to this PNWFF thread. The word on AI is finally getting out. Let's hope our leaders have enough time to act now that the threat is public. Again congrats to the heros who blew the whistle here!

I for one welcome our new AI overlords. When they flip the switch I'll break into a market with my hammer for supplies, drive my truck out to a river while listening to Led Zeppelin on cassette, row my raft to my favorite run and wait it out.

Being old and cheap has it's advantages, keeping me in the analog world is one of them.

Simple. What's a bigger threat American Ai or Chinese Ai.

Like it or not AI IS COMING. You have no say in the matter whatsoever. It's just a matter of who's AI . It doesn't matter what expert says what. It doesn't matter if it's good or evil. It's far to late to stop it.
Point blank the western world view is objectively better than the eastern world view and everyone wants AI designed by people with western values especially in regards to the value of human life and freedom. Therefore America absolutely has to beat China at thr AI game.
To that end there is no room for Anti Ai activism in America
Chinese AI= slavery world wide.

I can get behind AI if it comes with a spell checker.

regarding y2k...

1. there wasn't any social media, no grassroots conspiracy theorizing driving the panic. the expressed concern was transmitted largely from technical experts out to the rest of us.

2. the most knowledgeable layer of subject matter experts were writing and distributing preventative software tools to address a thing that most people seem now to believe was never going to be a thing. but it seems to me the facts are that it was a thing - prevented by the very folks who should have seen it coming, and had the knowledge, expertise, and resources to head it off at the pass. which they did.

there seems now to be an assumption by many, if not most, that all of the fuss was over nothing. i don't think that's true. maybe there are insiders or industry adjacent pros who know the particulars and can chime in. what i remember is having an entry level white collar job at microsoft at the time - and the IT folks there took it very seriously and expended a lot of resource to prep every machine on campus for the event. i don't think that was because they were superstitious.
No, they were prudent. And we'd known for 2 + decades there was a potential problem. I was a senior in high school in 76 and we'd been discussing it even then.

Then the more paranoid in the "Survivalist Movement " got hold of it and suddenly there was a spotlight on a problem most people didn't understand or know about, aided by mass media hysteria, probably because ultra wealthy people like Ted Turner OWNED those media outlets and would be impacted harder than they wanted to admit.
