Up at the crack: fishing day breakfasts?

Large black coffee, or a mug of earl grey steeped 8 minutes +honey.

Cold cereal, oatmeal with raisins walnuts, dark brown sugar and a square of butter, a slice of quiche (ingredients vary) warm granola cereal, two granola bars, a bagel or English muffins with cream cheese, fried egg sandwich using wheat toast, tomato slice and spinach, sometimes a Starbucks bacon/ gouda/egg sandwich. All of those are in rotation for an early morning breakfast for me.

And yeah, a good brefkist burrito 🌯 fits in there too.

Another favorite is a bagel. Although it has not been great for my waistline, Bainbridge recently got a legit bagel place (Briny Bagels). Growing up in the northeast, Saturday bagels was a common thing. So we don’t eat them too frequently, my wife and I generally just go to the shop and get one when the urge hits. On occasion, we’ll take home a few for the rest of the week.

If available, I sometimes choose an everything bagel with cream cheese over the breakfast burrito. Makes a hell of a mess in the truck though :).

Outside of coho season, I generally have oatmeal before heading out. Not a fan of eating with a spoon while driving though.

I almost always skip lunch while fishing. Common for me to skip lunch in general so not a big miss. I do need to be better about bringing water with me to the beach though. Something I almost never remember to do.

As a new father, my fishing trips are half-days at best, usually back home by 11am. So it’s a pour over coffee into the insulated mug and a couple perfect bars jammed into the pack. I’m never hungry while I’m out there, and even if I was I wouldn’t take the time to sit and eat. Every second with the fly in the water is an opportunity!

Coffee, black, out of a Mr. Coffee
Some sort of fruit product, bananas or oranges usually, apples in the Fall.

Crunchey peanut butter on a tortilla, jam sometimes, but not often. Creamy peanut butter is a non starter

Feeling flush and I'll hit the gas station or mini mart for some nasty ass burrito thing of various mystery meat and cheese.

Eggamuffin....

Back in the day used to be you could just roll up to any LES SCHWAB location. Any of the various INTERMOUNTAIN-WEST LES SCHWAB locations.

Saturday morning aways guys in there talkin tires. Coffees on strong!!! Bathroom available. Always guys standing around talkin tires at these LES SCHWAB LOCATIONS with available bathrooms --- PLUNGERS IN EVERY STALL.
Goddamn you nailed that one Travers

I also would order those burritos. 😁

If I need to get out the door early, especially if I have to hookup the boat, it's a small bowl of Costco Cascadian Farm Blueberry Almond Crunch. It's the low sugar (uses dates to sweeten it) low carb cereal that I've settled on since I'm a cereal guy, but wanted to cut my sugar & carbs. And no erythritol. Google it. I stopped eating it.

And I'll have a reusable K-cup (w/ paper filter added) pre-loaded with Peets Brazil ready to go into the old Keurig Slim. Hit 8oz and then add a squirt of honey, a touch of Molina vanilla and then 2 or 3 spoons of half & half. Pour that into just enough ice (12 of my Amazon round ice balls) in an aluminum cup to make it cold by the time all the ice is melted. I guess you'd call it a cold vanilla breve? Or a melted ice vanilla breve? 😁

I usually just take the coffee and my 32oz Nalgene of water out and put them in the truck, get all hooked up and then drink the coffee on the drive. Costco shelled pistachios are always in the boat/raft. This routine can get me well past lunch, especially if I also pack an apple and a couple beers. 🍺 Good fishing always helps too!

For Me it's usually just a bowl of grape nut flakes ,and a banana , and I am off . Your cereal is one I will definitely try .

For similar reasons to what @jasmillo cited, I don't do much. I really don't like waking up the family, and they're light sleepers (unlike me).

My goal is usually to just get something in my stomach that kick starts the day. My current go to is a banana, hand full of cashews and a glass of mtn ops ignite (pink lemonade). My coffee maker isn't very quiet (it grinds whole beans) so I avoid coffee unless I have an empty house, in which case I make two cups.

What are your go tos?

I fish daybreak year around in western Washington. Especially coho and SRC fishing in the salt. Most of the year, I can have a civilized bite (in my kitchen) before heading out with a mug of hot coffee to fish. Come coho season, especially July and August, making a ruckus in the kitchen at 3:30 am after my alarm already woke up the whole house, is a sure way to end up on the better half’s bad side. For years, my primary solution was a cliff bar or Starbucks if open. These days, I’m on a breakfast burrito kick. Ground turkey from taco Tuesday, eggs, pico, hot sauce and a couple jalapeño slices. Pair with a big mug of black coffee in a travel mug and it’s the perfect wake me up on the way to the fishing grounds. With minimal kitchen ruckus required.

Long weekend coming up. I’ve got my Friday to Monday breakfasts ready to go.

What breakfasts do you all take on the road when heading out to fish for the day?
Have you tried the uncooked tortillas? Costco usually has them, and I've seen them at safeway and QFC now. Tortilla land is the brand I've been seeing (in the refrigerated section). They don't have all the extra stuff in them that allows the cooked ones to last so long, but they only take a hot second to cook and they taste way better (IMO). Give it a whirl sometime if you're heavy into the burrito scene.

I have to literally force myself to eat breakfast. My mind & body just don't want food in the morning.
It's because you literally don't need it. We eat the largest meal of the day, sit down, unwind, and go to bed. We have calories to spare going into the next afternoon. Even those in the habit of eating in the morning will find if they don't start their day with something, they'll not be hungry for way longer than they'd expect.

But.... breakfast foods are awesome and any time one of my buddies comes along and brings a breakfast boat-rito, I eat and enjoy happily.

For years I ate my biggest meal of the day at lunch and just a snack type thing, sandwich or bowl of soup or a salad at dinner...
Eventually I got out of what seemed to be a pretty good routine, and lost the habit...

I'm in the @Matt B camp; PB (Actually, almond) & J plus the all important coffee. One cup while I'm loading out and a second in the travel mug. Then it's mostly nuts and dried fruit throughout the day.
