Had yesterday off so I fished MA 9 from 7-12. Super slow while I was there. Had one hookup right when I walked in that didn’t feel big, then 5 hours or nothing. Lotta big fish jumping. Think I counted 10 fly fishers split between the shore and 2 boats. Even the seal was coming up empty.

Shirking one’s responsibilities in life to go fishing all day in beautiful weather 4 days in a row is not for the faint of heart. I brave incredibly relaxing days on the water so you don’t have to. I many ways, I should be hailed as a hero. I expect a beer on you if we ever meet in person for my sacrifice. Maybe even two.

3 more hours today. 1-2. Fortunately, this hell is over and I get to head back to work for a few days.

1 for 2 today. Nothing special size wise. Didn’t feel like filleting a fish when I got home, so back it went. So small herring around. This is one a shaker puked up.

1/1 on 3 beaches in about 4.5 hours. Would have been 5.5 hours if I didn’t forget my waders at home lots of bait at two of the beaches but extremely slow, didn’t see another fish hit the beach.

Lots of work for two. One beach was slow, one wild. Then another beach nada. Landed on an evening good spot on the incoming with a plethora of bait. Both had a lot of 1.5” - 2” baitfish (chrome/white) in their belly’s and one had this 6”.

Fished from 5am-7pm, with an hour break in between. Went 3/5 on coho and broke off what I’m assuming was a nice king, given the brute force of the eat, tug, speed, and size when it jumped after popping my leader while I was strip setting. Only kept one coho as I was looking for something better, but the better ones got away. Oh well.

Also, got to play tug of war with a seal who decided to grab my stringer fish that was tied around my waist. That was a first for me and the last time I stringer a fish around my waist.

I saw a post where someone caught an even year Puget Sound pink. Used to see them occasionally caught off the beaches, but haven’t personally seen one caught in a number of years. Anyone see any caught on even years recently?

Fished a west facing beach. No greedy seal, which was nice, but there was an overly friendly heron, which was a first for me. Herring folks caught a few, buzz bombers lost a few. I lost my one solid hookup 20 minutes before sunrise and that was it for me. Except for a surprise greenling! Another first.

2/4 today. That seal (or its buddy) from yesterday chased down two of my fish this morning and succeeded in taking one off my line. Well, it didn’t take it off my line, I had to break the leader to get my line back as it was munching away. At least after it had a good meal it disappeared for a long while.

If you’re fishing the beach I assume you are, it’s been a huge problem this year. Just patrolling up and down the beach and blasting off as soon as it hears someone reeling one in.

Any of you old gizzlers who’ve been fishing the beaches for lots of years recall a time a seal camped out for weeks at the same beach harassing anglers?

I took some video of a ~15 pound clipped chinook swimming past me along the beach line (MA9). At first I thought it was a small seal.
*** It is illegal to target this fish and the thousands of other hatchery chinook.

That seal definitely has an affinity for @SteelHeadDave. I may have jinxed him by telling him he was brave hanging that coho off his belt yesterday .

0-0 yesterday and 1-2 before work for me today. One right before daybreak and another hookup 10 minutes before I had to leave.

Any of you old gizzlers who’ve been fishing the beaches for lots of years recall a time a seal camped out for weeks at the same beach harassing anglers?

I remember about 2 years ago or so @SteelHeadDave had a baby seal come right up to him at that beach and he had to splash the water to send it on its way. The next year there was a juvenile seal that set up camp in the same area of the beach and was stealing shakers and a few adult fish from people. I'm not sure if the baby seal is the same one but I'm 90% sure that the same seal from last year has gotten a bit bigger and is doing the exact same thing this year. It has a big brown splotch on it's back that makes it pretty recognizable. I have nothing against seals, but factoring one into the already tough equation of hooking and landing a salmon on a fly rod is a variable I’d rather skip. I've switched beaches multiple times because I know that if I hook a fish I'm gonna have to fight the seal for it. It is a cute little fella though, and watching it swim around your legs can be fun sometimes (If I don't have a fish on )
