NFR: The War in Ukraine

I’m just curious; how is it that my 12 yo Toyota Matirx, the one that I fill up at whatever cheap gas station I happen to be near when the fuel level warning light goes on, is even still running?

The way I understand it is that it'll be an option at certain stations, but won't be the standard.
Well that is at least a little easier to handle. I’m an idiot on this stuff……will diesel still be diesel? I meant expensive diesel!!

If willing to pay the significant upcharge, can always go to a station that has a non ehtanol pump (only thing I use in boat motors and lawn equipment), fill half your tank with that, the rest with the ethanol. Filled the Suburban with Regular yesterday, was down to a quarter tank, stared numbly at the $95 receipt. Last time I filled it was a month ago, use the wife's Forester every chance I get.

As far as I know you can't even get E15 in this state so it won't have any effect here. Less than 2% of the gas stations in the entire country even carry E15 to begin with, mostly in the midwest. I'm pretty fortunate that the Shell station near my house carries ethanol free 87 so that's all I use for the boat and my yard equipment.

It's already expensive. Anywhere between $5-6.50 a gallon in some places. And, some states keep mandating more additives to reduce the hated exhaust smoke and smell.

Edited to add…happy to see this thread is on page 4 cause i didn’t think it would last past page 2 when i first looked.
Perhaps autocracy does work after all.

Damn Ukranians sunk the Moskva! Go Ukraine!

Then I got to thinking about the environmental pollution of the Black Sea caused by sinking a large battleship. There is no winning in this conflict.
Anyone think Russia won't release a chemical weapon or battlefield nuke at some point? If they do, game changer, it will then become Russia vs NATO. Putin's backed himself into a corner, and desperate despots do desperate things.

Yes, I think Putin will use chemical weapons within Ukraine's border and may also launch a conventional missile at a staging area near the border, in a NATO country. Not sure the former would necessarily make it a Russia v. NATO war, but the latter would (or should).

Let’s hope NATO is better than the CDC and WHO… 😉

Consider Putin, himself, and his immediate family! Even though he has shown little to no regard for human life, including Russians, is he willing to destroy those few things he cares about?

Re electrification of transportation, I thought this was an interesting story:

For those who've supported World Central Kitchen, sad news.

Missile hits World Central Kitchen partner restaurant in Kharkiv, wounding four staffers, WCK CEO says

From CNN’s Pierre Meilhan
A restaurant partnered with celebrity chef and global humanitarian José Andrés' organization, World Central Kitchen, was hit by a missile in Kharkiv, Ukraine, wounding four staffers, WCK CEO Nate Mook said Saturday.
He described the scene as one of “horrific brutality.”
In a video posted on Twitter, Mook stood in front of the building that took what he said was a “big hit” from a missile that left “tremendous amounts of damage” and “a dozen cars burnt out.” The kitchen also suffered damage, according to Mook, who said no one was killed at the restaurant but that one person was killed in the strike.
CNN has not independently confirmed the death.

“This is a tremendous amount of carnage left behind for no reason,” Mook said, adding that “coming to work, cooking for people that are hungry is an immense act of bravery."
The WCK CEO said a fire was burning at the site, which he also visited before the attack, on Friday, to pick up meals with the WCK team. He described the area as residential with offices.
Mook said he was heading to a hospital to check on the restaurant staff, whom he was told were “OK.”
Following the Russian invasion in Ukraine, Andrés provided meals along the country's western border through World Central Kitchen. He said WCK started making food in Ukraine hours after the fighting started and that they're serving 250,000 meals each day.
In 2021, Andrés was a recipient of Jeff Bezos’ Courage and Civility Award, an honor which came with $100 million.
Andrés has earmarked some of those funds for Ukraine.

There's either a Facebook or Twitter article embedded in the article, but I wasn't able to copy it.
