NFR Queens are out and about

Non-fishing related
I had no luck catching queens so far, but got zapped by a worker out at the woodshed the other day. I noticed a few buzzing around today so I got excited to try Evan’s Filpronil & tuna method. Hope it works!IMG_6840.jpegIMG_6840.jpeg

I put up two of those traps since reading this thread and I've only caught 4 so far... lol
That can be OK. Two years ago was my first time setting the trap out early in the spring. I caught a bunch of queens. But last year and this year, only a handful. The result is that we've had far, far fewer yellowjackets around in August and September. If there were more queens in your area, you'd be catching more.

Ouch! What is the milk crate setup for?
I didn't want to poison any local wildlife (cats, possums or racoons) and I knew the aroma of an open can of tuna might lure them in. So I put the crate over it to keep out the bigger visitors and only let the yellow jackets in to access the Filpronil seasoned meat.

I'm to 16 total! Haha every one is a win.

Trapped about a dozen queens early, the first year I put traps out before any wasps were spotted, and have seen very few wasps around since as a result. Highly effective.

Well day before yesterday I got the unpleasure of meeting 5-7 bald face hornets while weedeating or hill walking trail... i can run fast with weedeater strap around my neck and having to leap over downed trees I was going to clear next.

But today with my bee suit on I cleared the test of the trail... and got my revenge on the hornets! They are no more!

Do you see it?

It's done for now!

My yellowjacket traps have been empty this spring and most of the early summer! Much better than the past two years of eradicating their nests in my yard. But my neighbor mentioned he discovered a big yellowjacket nest in his attic. Suddenly my traps filled daily for about a week until his pest eliminator guy nuked the nest.

This year my problem is an explosion of mice and voles in my yard. Ground burrows are all over my place and the voles gnaw on certain plants and bulbs. Once abandoned, these burrows can quickly become yellowjacket nests.
