Puget Sound

It's been a few months since I've been in the salt. Life, family and work have been keeping me pretty occupied.

Today I was able to take advantage of my works "Summer Friday" policy which means done at noon. I was hoping to get away a little further but the wind forecast wasn't looking too good where I wanted to go so I ended up just going to my local beach. First time this year for me plus it was better on the gas tank. Ended up getting a bunch of hits and put two in the net.

Felt good to make the connection after a few months hiatus.

That is such an awesome work policy. I fished the same local this evening, extra large serving of salad but no fish

Saw a few of our iridescent ancestors today.

Ctenophores or comb jellys. Very, very cool to see, I don't recall seeing the pulsating iridescent rainbows of their cilia before today. They look like they belong on Pandora more than earth. Be sure to say hello to great grandpa, possibly the true common ancestor of all animals, if you see any. Saw them described as a "colorful condom" on one website I found as I looked them up, so that seems to fit.

Had another successful local outing with 7 to the net yesterday afternoon on the incoming. Mostly smalls in the 7"- 9" range.

Coolest part was catching the first fish on the first cast on the second strip. Nice surprise. Thought that was gonna be all the luck for the day but turned out decent after two hours of fishing.

Lots of seaweed salad to work around. Patience was key.

Chum Body's Baby pattern seemed to be the ticket.

A few from MA 10 this morning on a pink fry pattern. Nothing big but a fun morning. Back to yard work tomorrow.

Sometime this summer @Irafly is supposed to take me out and show me how to use a type 7 full sink line to catch flounder from stupid deep depths. We should link up for that day, which could be legendary.
Is there a way to do this that involves bobbers?

On a side note, I wonder how big these fellows get in the wild. I have a childhood memory of an absurdly big starry in the Seattle aquarium. Like, easily ten lbs. He was maybe 1/3rd of the size of their very respectable halibut. I assumed that was normal size for them and wanted to find out how to target them lol

The state record is 9.5 lbs.

The largest recorded starry flounder was almost a yard long and almost 20 pounds (see here).
Steve

I bet a 20 lb starry would put up a hell of a fight. The fact males can live up to 24 years is very cool. Thanks for the info Steve!
