Yakima River

I fished on the 14th in that same stretch (Teanaway -> Thorp diversion) and the fishing was okay... I also got caught out with an over-night flow bump due to them pushing water for smolt out-migrating. I'd guess you'd have better luck with consistent flows (albeit higher flows) for the past few days, and prob slightly dropping.

I'd prob fish double-nymph rigs (Pats + PMD or Caddis) until it warms up. We should be close to the golden stone hatch so I'd keep those at the ready and fish dry-dropper or dry-dry.
@holtad I appreciate the info. Yeah, I personally have never fished anywhere above Irene Rinehart Park, only below it so I am excited to see some new area. I will definitely note to keep some of the golden stone flies handy just incase. But I appreciate the tips and info! Yeah I have a ton of pats handy so I will make sure to add a few pad or caddis nymphs. Thanks again!

Glad you had a good trip and some nice feesh.

Not meaning to be an a'hole, but are you not concerned about becoming a sea anchor should you somehow find yourself taking a swim (ie, no belt, no PFD)?
Good observation. My friend makes a big stupid deal every time I mention it. And that's his Lavro, so I didn't have a lot of cards to play. When we float together in smaller craft I tell him that we just ain't going if he won't put the damn thing on while we are floating, and he groans and grumbles and complains but he does it. He made a comment before this trip, "Bring a PFD for yourself," and I knew exactly what he meant. And so I did bring my inflatable PFD, and I wore it.

I fished.... the system.... which I like at this time of year....

If that's your style we gotta go fishing sometime! Can't decide what I would prioritize, the sandwich or the river.... that top part of your photo has been kind in years past. Though around the corner I misjudged my wade and spent an hour drying most all of my shit on the shore. Fished for a while in wading boots and boxers, wishing I had a sandwich like that...

Definitely sandwich priority, Boot. Get real.

Look at that thing—the perfect grill marks, the crisp romaine, the clean knife cut edge. That’s no typical riverside sammie. Rumor has it that Jerad packs in an expandable solar array to power his George Foreman grill for extravagant shore lunches. It’s like a whole bistro out there, seasonal menus, little umbrellas in the drinks, the whole nine yards.

Had I been carrying my Panini machine (the Avantco PG100GS Commercial) wading the Yak years ago, I may not have made it, that's about 12 pounds of unwieldy metal tipping the scales. PLus I think the circuitry wouldn't have taken a dunking, unlike say the Wolfgang Puck refurbished which may already have taken said dunking and lived...

Matt, what you illustrate suggests a potential cast of River Sherpas schlepping along Jerad's Toastie-filled excursions. I think you are spot on re the lux of it, which is why I want all in. Instead of the White Lotus, it's the Upper Yak Lotus! Plus it sounds like a blast and those fish were generous in proportion. Dude knows what he is doing!

$5 says Jerad took that Breville photo from a hammock strung between tamaracks... Alternatively a sedan chair....

Yesterday we floated the Upper Yakima, putting in at Teanaway Junction and taking out at Green Bridge, and man… it gave us the business. Extremely low, clear water and some pretty tough fishing conditions. Personally, we didn’t see much in the way of risers and the bite definitely wasn’t on for us.

We managed to hook a few smaller cutthroat tucked into some of the deeper pools, but we had to really work for every fish. Had one random but awesome hookup on a solid rainbow while drifting through some heavier water/rapids — only to lose it right at the boat. Tough and humbling day, but hey… still beats a day at the office!

That said, what an absolutely beautiful stretch of river. The scenery alone makes that float worth it. Also, are they planning on developing on one of the stretches? It looked like the property belonged to Wallace Ranch, but looked like they were starting to mark lots. Wild.

For flies, we mainly ran Pats Rubber Legs in black and brown (sizes 4–8). We played around with sizing quite a bit, and the bigger rainbow actually ate the size 6 Pats. Underneath we rotated through a size 16 pheasant tail, a PMD, Duracell type of flies and a Brush Hog.

It sounds like the day before, though, the Upper was actually fishing pretty solid from what I’ve heard. Makes me wonder if it had something to do with the dam flows or water conditions changing overnight? Curious if anyone else noticed anything similar. Also could be user error 😂 Tends to happen time from time.

If it's low and clear and sunny, the fish were probably in heavier water with some chop, like where you hooked that rainbow. Gotta feel safe somehow!

That makes sense, more chop less visibility! Gotta hide somewhere! But man, did that section/ day humble us! Love/ hate those days for sure! Still beats any day in the office plus got to learn a little bit. Waiting to plan now round two on that stretch for some hopeful redemption. haha

Nice to hear that some find good fishing for halfway decent trout on the Yakima. I spent just one day on it ever. Last summer I treated a friend to a float with a highly regarded local guide. Parts of it sure looked promising. We caught or at least hooked at least 30 fish, maybe more, but the largest by far might have been pushing 8 inches. Don't think I will be tempted to make that trek again.

The canyon area last time we fished it was solid, just yesterday was one of those days on a new to me stretch of river! You ought to give it another try!

It helps to have stable flows. It's not uncommon that the days of and right after significant flow changes make the bite go off a bit. I think we both fished on the transition days right after big changes--the 24th and 27th. Nice days to be out on the water, but not the days I'd pick to fish based on the hydrograph, if I could pick. Mostly, I don't get to pick.

Summer is notorious for getting high numbers of small fish. You're way more likely to find bigger fish in the spring and fall, but are more subject to the whims of the flows/weather. Summer is a great time to take kids if you want to ensure they get into a few fish :)

Agreed @holtad, which is another reason why I personally stop fishing it after the salmon fly hatch and don't again until the fall. Fall is tough though with so many other options! Really the best time to be a sportsman.

Floating the canyon on a hot summer day, even without fishing it, is probably one of the great joys of living where we do. To me it is always cool to see a large group of various people floating, not looking at their phones, everybody's happy.....everybody's in the spirit. It's a cool thing to do with out of town guests, old friends, kids....

This is true!

Has anyone else done the Green Bridge to Diversion stretch lately? I did it Saturday despite the wind, and did okay on nymphs, but one thing I wanted to mention is that the last little stretch appears to have changed quite a bit from the flooding. The last set of rapids just before the straightaway to the takeout are much gnarlier than I remember. Would love to compare notes with someone else.

Yes, I fish that stretch regularly (have some property about halfway between the bridge and the diversion). And yes, that last stretch is much bigger that before (at least at the higher water levels). The boulders on the right side are pretty gnarly, but the left side was fine. Had a buddy go over the boulders in his personal watercraft (was fishing and not looking up) and managed not to dump anything, but was a little shaken up by it.

As for fishing, I've been cursed by fishing only on days that have wind and a big bump in flows (0 for 3). Fished Friday and had the river bumping up on me (getting dirtier) hr by hr. Hooked into a few small fish is all, all on nymphs. I'd love to find a day to fish when the flows have stayed somewhat constant.

That was my experience as well. Was thinking river left would be the way to go. Will be interested what this looks like at low water. For some reason I love that stretch.
