A normal event on PNW ocean beaches. I saw (and smelled) them for the first time as a kid on the Oregon coast. I read they are not true jellyfish, but a type of hydrozoan. Velella velella

I was just glad we didn’t have our little dog with us again. He gobbled these things up last year and had liquid poo for a week (in a rental house).

I found no washed up lancetfish to go with the velella velella this year.

I've seen these "sailors" off the shore of Southern California in massive numbers. They seemed to signify that an El Niño event was about to happen.

Beautiful purple creatures using their sails with the wind to move across the ocean. First I would see a few of them, and then I would see millions of them. Every seven (or so) years, Southern California experienced an El Niño event. These "sailors" were a very worrisome sign.
