4/5/22 Yakima River

Today Ollie (6) and I floated the Yakima from [redacted] to [redacted], a distance of about 10+ miles. Sure the pass sucked a bit, but not as much as the fearmongers would have had everyone believe. As we drove into the Canyon we marveled at the high amount of swallow(?) and kingfisher activity over the water. We’d outsmarted everyone!

When we got to the launch, we were giddy. Bait were present in numbers (the silly things swarmed our legs), and there were skwala still, and the sky was blue with puffy white clouds. Could have done without the 25-30mph winds, but it doesn’t take much casting to drop a nymph rig over the side.

We hit all the choice shelves and couldn’t believe that we had the river to ourselves.

By the time we passed Red’s, we’d only seen one bank fisher.

By the time we passed Wymer Wall, we’d only seen one other person—another bank fisher-and we were confused. It was a beautiful day, and we only occasionally had to row to go down river.

When the mayflies started hatching,

Ollie spent a very long time learning how to pick dry flies out of trees.

By the time we pulled out at milepost 8, we hadn’t seen anyone else. So, we stopped in at Red’s and learned we’d had the river to ourselves.

And now we know why; the rest of you all stayed home and caught almost as many fish.
