Coffee talk

I went to a couple of coffee farms around Kona in December. Heard that the last two crops were mostly bust. A combination of shifting precipitation patterns that caused a “leaf rust” and some persistent boring insects that attack the berries were real issues. I certainly noticed the coffee prices on the island were up from a couple years ago.
 
For me, Kona coffee is fine coffee. It’s like the copper river salmon of coffee. But if/when I’m in Hawaii of course it’s what I’ll be drinking.

Have to ask; Does anyone besides me have any experience with the Kuju Coffee individual pour overs you can buy from Amazon?

These are great for a lunch box style meal kit. Just need a source of hot water and a cup.

My issue is with the price, @1.50 a cup.
 
No experience with those, but i like the individual Starbucks Via instant packets for camping. All you need is a cup of hot water. You can even use the packet to stir it. They also taste good.

They are not cheap either, but the convenience is hard to beat.

I use the lighter roast Vias like that too. Pro caffeine addict tip—the water doesn’t have to be hot. They’re actually pretty good for a quick iced coffee in that way.

Of course the hardcore addicts would dispense with the water altogether and simply place a pinch between their cheek and gum. :p
 
You know , I complain about the cost @ 1.50/ cup. But just remembered that stopping at a coffee stand will cost a person @ 2-3.00 or more for a single serving. And that's not including the gas for your vehicle to even get there, or idling, while you sit in the drive thru.

For those who are addicted to the pour over method, how do you keep your filters from allowing larger particles making it into your cup ?? I'm having a bit of a problem with what I think are filter tears while brewing.
 
It's Sunday. I'm 98% espresso drinker, with an occasional pour over, when the mood strikes. I'm still loving the Fresh Roast SR800. I found that the excellent, instructional videos, from "The Captain's Coffee", on Youtube are the best. I've been experimenting with their beans, too. Shipping is fast, since they're located in Bingen, WA. My wife still prefers the decaf from Sweet Maria's.

I love my dark roasts. I lean towards Sumatra, but I've been experimenting with these Yemen beans from Sweet Maria's.

My twelve year old Rocky grinder by Rancilio. I've never had an issue with it.

The 'Miss Silvia', by Rancilio is also 12 years old, and a first generation. I've made a handful of upgrades, and pretty extensive maintenance over the years, but it makes excellent coffee, and parts are common.

Anyone else make regular use of a Moka Pot? I have a Bialetti stainless 2-cup variety. I’ll make a nice strong cup tomorrow morning. I have a system down now but it took a lot of reps to get something consistent.

What works for me:
  • Boil water first
  • Fill reservoir to the middle of the pressure vent
  • Use a robust coffee in the medium to med-dark roast range
  • Grind fine but not necessarily espresso fine
  • Fill the basket level but don’t pack it in
  • Use medium-low heat for the brew process
  • It takes several minutes to get the brewing started but goes fast

Mistakes I made along the way
  • Starting with cold water then trying to rush the brewing process
  • Under/over filling the reservoir
  • Under/over filling the coffee basket
  • Using delicate, light roast coffee
When it all comes together it’s really good. But I made some bad coffee along the way!
I'm a fan of the Moka. I have several, but use the four pot for trips, with the family, and the stainless one, like yours for my solo ventures, hunting or fishing or traveling for work. I'm in line with your process, but I prefer dark roasts. Grinds are difficult to obtain, but I find that what makes the biggest difference in making a decent pot of coffee, from a cup of scorched tar, is watching the process, actively controlling the burner, and nothing above medium heat.
 
My favorite setup, doesn't matter what you roast or put into it, it tastes like shit by the time it's ready. But it's about where you are and I like coffee. :)

I use the Moka too. Having lived in Germany I got hooked on them quick. I always bought the bigger pots.

SVEA 23 It's been all over the northwest, backpack, bike or car, and still works as intended 40+ years later.

What a machine! 150 pounds and requires a 240 Volt outlet. I was getting kinda turned on until I saw the $15,000 sticker price. :cry:

My god. If there was coffee flavored dip I don't think I ever would have managed to quit tobacco... 🤤
