Need some clarification on the banana jinx

Seems like another lame excuse if fishing sucks that particular “banana” day. Not that I’ll be eating any while fishing……
 
I usually blame the fact that I wasn't holding my cigar correctly in my mouth. I'm sure its the bananas 🍌 now though.. someone by me has a damn banana! 😆
 
It is my understanding that this started with a Hawaiian king. Making excuses for being a shitty fisherman goes back a long way!

I don't believe in the banana bunk but a couple of my fishing buddies do. One time I brought banana bread on an outing and into Herb's boat: I haven't ever done that again!

There's another fisherman's jinx that is true and it's ruined lots of fishing. You head out with a friend and get to the lake or the bay and your friend says "oh man, it's not windy". JINXED! Five minutes later it's whitecapping. It happens every time, without fail. Moral of the story: it's okay to say "it's calm" or "man, no W"...... but never use that four letter word. ;-)

I don't bring 'em on boats (don't want to lose favor with any buddies with boats), but I eat them before fishing often, and I don't think they affect my success rate much. As has been said, sone days are just better than others.
 
A few years ago I took a young family friend and her parents fishing for stocked trout in a local lake. Mom pulled out a banana and I told her that was not good. She didn’t believe me until other fishers walked by and told us that bananas are bad juju. I generally don’t eat bananas while fishing, but it was fun to see everyone’s reaction.
 
It should be obvious that this whole banana jinx was started by none other than Big Orange. Think about it - a banana is a perfect snack to bring on a boat. It's delicious, nutritious, it has its own protective wrap so you can lay it on a seat and not worry if it gets splashed, it's easy to peel when you're ready to eat it, and it doesn't make a mess. Hard to beat. Hard to compete with that fairly. So, you start a myth that it brings bad luck and what do people turn to for an alternative? Always follow the money.......🍊
 
I had been fishing for many years by the time I learned of the bad luck bananas bring. And I probably had a banana in half my lunches over those years with no fishing luck correlation with or without bananas. So I don't give it no mind unless I'm going on a boat whose owner doesn't want them on board.
 
So why do banana plugs/jigs catch fish?

Stellar idea, though I would advise not to start with an expensive, randomized, double-blind, multicenter, international study - at the next PNWFF rondi, a preliminary Phase I proof-of-concept study could be performed:

Study Title: The Effect of Bananas of the Catching of Fish, a Phase I Exploratory Study
Synopsis
Methodology:
This study is a Phase I, open-label, single-site, dose-escalation, cross-over study to explore the effect of bananas on the catching of fish. The study will consist of 3 banana doses with 3 participants in each cohort:

Cohort 1: 3 participants; 0 bananas each
Cohort 2: 3 participants; 1 banana each
Cohort 3: 3 participants: 2 bananas each

Day 1: Each participant will leave camp and enter the lake at dawn, paddle to their designated fishing spot (ie, Spot 1, 2, or 3), and commence fishing. To avoid any banana-proximity effect, all participants in a single cohort will fish within the same designated spot. Cohorts/spots will be separated by the greatest distance the Rondi lake will allow.   5. Participants must use (wear) a sanctioned personal flotation device while fishing from any floating platform
Key Exclusion Criteria:
  1. Individuals who are not members of PNWFF are not eligible for inclusion
  2. The use of bait is not allowed
  3. Individuals who wish to use tackle other than standard fly fishing equipment will not be eligible (see Inclusion criterion # 4)
  4. The use of fish finders is prohibited

Statistical Considerations:
A detailed and comprehensive Statistical Analysis Plan (SAP) will be written and approved prior to database lock.

  • Continuous variables: Number of observations (N), mean, standard deviation (SD), 90% confidence intervals (CIs), median, minimum, and maximum

All CIs will be 2-sided 90% CIs. All analyses are exploratory, no statistical tests will be employed.

Statistical analyses will be performed using SAS Version 9.4 or higher. Any deviation from the SAP will be reported in the final Study Report, which in accordance with EU CTR Annex IV will be released within 1 year of the end of the study.

Special Committees:
A FAC will be employed to determine the mode of fly fishing (dry, nymph, streamer) based upon Rondi conditions and their personal
idiosyncrasies. The FAC will also be responsible for determining fish weight from submitted, time-stamped, annotated photographs. There was a famous Kona charter captain that once threaded a 250 lb/test mono leader thru a banana, crimped on an 11/0 Mustad, tied on a blue & pink skirt and trolled it behind in the spread in a tournament and of course hooked and landed a marlin...
